There's been a long back-and-forth from Sony Ericsson and the dev community as to whether or not the Xperia X10 was at all capable of multi-touch -- the company stance has been that the hardware just can't do it , but still whispers to the contrary have lingered. Consider those murmurs validated: Sony Ericsson Product Blog has announced that the X10 will, in fact, get multi-touch in the first quarter of next year -- with some caveats. The large asterisk that's destined to clarify the minutiae will tell you that pinch-to-zoom will be enabled for browser and maps, but as the blog post put it, "situations like when the movement of the two fingers cross each other on the X- or Y-axis that could cause strange behavior." Third-party apps should be able to join some functionality, too, with the similar limitations (including when buttons must be pressed simultaneously -- that won't work)

There’s been a long back-and-forth from Sony Ericsson and the dev community as to whether or not the Xperia X10 was at all capable of multi-touch — the company stance has been that the hardware just can’t do it, but still whispers to the contrary have lingered. Consider those murmurs validated: Sony Ericsson Product Blog has announced that the X10 will, in fact, get multi-touch in the first quarter of next year — with some caveats. The large asterisk that’s destined to clarify the minutiae will tell you that pinch-to-zoom will be enabled for browser and maps, but as the blog post put it, “situations like when the movement of the two fingers cross each other on the X- or Y-axis that could cause strange behavior.” Third-party apps should be able to join some functionality, too, with the similar limitations (including when buttons must be pressed simultaneously — that won’t work). In the video demonstration after the break, take note how Angry Birds doesn’t quite pinch and zoom smoothly. So yeah, it’s not all sunshine, but at least there’s something to look forward to.

Altek's wonderfully outlandish Android-based Leo smartphone, which sports a "real" 14 megapixel CCD with "real" 3x optical zoom and 720p video, was already slated for Q4 of this year in Asia, but Altek has recently announced the phone will also be launching Q1 2011 in Europe. On a slightly disconcerting note, Altek says it's still in search of "channel partners," so if you happen to know any channel / partner combos, push this little monster in their direction before 14 megapixels starts to sound old hat, would you?
Don’t know about you, but our poor Motorola Dext (or Cliq as it’s know in the Land of the Free) had been left gathering dust for some time as it got unbearably laggy, even after a few wipes. We only clung onto this Android 1.5 device in the hope that Motorola or T-Mobile would stick to their update schedules. And boy we got lucky, as an anonymous leakster dropped off an allegedly official T-Mobile 2.1 ROM for said phone yesterday, which sounds about right when you think of the carrier’s planned August update. Read on to find out how the new ROM’s running on our Dext — we’ve also got a hands-on video for you.

While there's still no ( official ) word on when we'll get any BlackBerry OS 6 hardware, much less that 9800 Bold , RIM has seen fit to provide us another glimpse at the software front.

While there’s still no (official) word on when we’ll get any BlackBerry OS 6 hardware, much less that 9800 Bold, RIM has seen fit to provide us another glimpse at the software front. This time round we’re looking at multimedia features, including the photo gallery, a brand-new podcasts app and YouTube, alongside extra camera controls (including a face detection mode) and roundabout confirmation that at least some new BlackBerries will support pinch-to-zoom. Oddly enough, there’s no video showing off the new multimedia functionality, just a set of stills, but we suppose RIM realizes it’s all been done before and Crackberry addicts will take whatever they can get right now.

As cameraphone picture quality goes, the story is that it’s not really about the sensor resolution, it’s about the optics — and if you want to go by that rule, Altek’s beastly Leo should probably have your attention. Just because you’ve got a huge, telescoping lens doesn’t mean it’s any good, of course, but we’d argue that it’s a good sign in a world dominated by tiny, plastic lenses atop 8 and 12 megapixel sensors of questionable heritage. Indeed, the Android-powered monster has bowed at CommunicAsia 2010 as promised, bringing a 14 megapixel CCD with an honest-to-goodness 3x optical zoom and 720p video capture, WVGA display, 802.11n WiFi, and HSPA for a Q4 ’10 release. Amazingly, Altek plans on selling it for $499 — unlocked, we assume — and CNET Asia managed to score a few minutes with it this week. Follow the break for video from the event along with Altek’s press release.

The N900 already features one of the best pocket browsing experiences we've ever seen, but it looks to be getting a whole lot better today with the beta release of Firefox 1.1. Major new features include portrait browsing (awesome), form auto-complete, a context menu, volume key zoom, and -- this is pretty neat -- the capability to save pages straight to PDF, so it seems like the kind of thing you'll definitely want to download, even if it's not quite solid enough to earn gold build status.
You might recall that fascinating video a while back showing the Nexus One's touch sensor getting all discombobulated when the tester's multitouch fingerwork started to get a little too fancy, and now, Android Central has confirmed that Verizon's Droid Incredible doesn't suffer the same fate -- but why is that, exactly? Android and Me is reporting that the Droid Incredible and EVO 4G both employ an Atmel maXTouch sensor with unlimited touch support -- a relatively new product launched in late '09 -- whereas the Nexus One is using Synaptics' older ClearPad 2000, which was designed to top out with simple two-finger gestures like pinch zoom.
You might recall that fascinating video a while back showing the Nexus One’s touch sensor getting all discombobulated when the tester’s multitouch fingerwork started to get a little too fancy, and now, Android Central has confirmed that Verizon’s Droid Incredible doesn’t suffer the same fate — but why is that, exactly? Android and Me is reporting that the Droid Incredible and EVO 4G both employ an Atmel maXTouch sensor with unlimited touch support — a relatively new product launched in late ’09 — whereas the Nexus One is using Synaptics’ older ClearPad 2000, which was designed to top out with simple two-finger gestures like pinch zoom. The upshot? Complicated multitouch games might end up being less playable (or downright unusable) on the Nexus One, but the silver lining is that HTC’s gone ahead and rolled out better components for its latest round of devices that should prevent this from being a problem going forward. Follow the break for Android Central’s video of the Droid Incredible multitouching circles around the Nexus One — figuratively speaking, of course.

The leaks, they keep coming.

The leaks, they keep coming. Boy Genius has some new images and details on BlackBerry OS 6.0 today, and while we’ve got our fair share of questions, there’s no denying that what we’re seeing looks like a substantial and much-needed improvement to the platform. First off, it appears that RIM’s acquisition of Torch Mobile has paid off with a totally new WebKit-based browser, complete with tab switching, redesigned favorites, and pinch-to-zoom. About time, we’d say. Pinch-to-zoom and multitouch are also said said to be present system-wide, along with kinetic scrolling, and long-pressing on the screen brings up a new modal context menu. That’s definitely intriguing. The media player, photo viewer, and messaging apps have all also been re-done, and we’re told the new inbox offers Facebook, Twitter, and RSS integration. The best part? BGR says this is all due out in June / July, “100%.”

Now, here’s the interesting parts. First, it’s obvious that this system is made for and being demoed on a touchscreen device, yet BGR says it was being shown off by an “AT&T connect.” That suggests Ol’ Blue is about to get a touchscreen BlackBerry of its own to counter Verizon’s Storm sometime soon — perhaps that leaked slider? We can’t say for sure. What we can say for sure is that this is the third set of 6.0 leaks we’ve seen that have content about San Francisco and the earthquake in Haiti displayed on the screen — and while RIM has said the previous two leaks were just mockups, it’s more than a little odd that SF / Haiti has become a theme here. What does it all mean? We may never know, but whatever — just hit us with that new browser and we’ll stop asking questions.
