Yahoo messenger coming to iPhone and Android with cross-platform 3G video calls
You'll be seeing a lot more of the good ol' Yahoo smiley on front-facing cameraphones soon -- the web portal's VP of Mobile David Katz says that a new Yahoo! Messenger with cross-platform video chat is headed to Android and iPhone. Originally confirmed for the new T-Mobile myTouch , it's presently been submitted to the iTunes App Store for review.

Microsoft prepping Yahoo, AIM, and Windows Live Messenger support for Kin?
The list of conspicuously missing features on Microsoft's Kin devices is a lengthy one, but considering the target demographic, there's at least one particularly egregious omission: instant messaging. Well-established ROM spelunker Conflipper is now reporting that Microsoft intends to add IM support in the future, though -- a belief he's presumably gleaned from looking through the latest firmware. Specifically, he mentions support for Yahoo Messenger, Windows Live Messenger, and AIM, a three-pack that would come close to covering the main services most of the Kin-owning world cares about; Google Talk would be nice, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if Microsoft went without -- especially considering that they're starting from zilch

RIM buys QNX, talks in-car infotainment, ‘intelligent peripherals’
RIM buying a relatively unknown company for an undisclosed sum may not ordinarily be the most exciting of the developments, but the company's acquisition of Ottawa-based QNX Software Systems does certainly raise some interesting questions, at least some of which RIM is actually answering. According to co-CEO Mike Lazaridis, RIM is buying QNX at least in part to "further integrate and enhance the user experience between smartphones and in-vehicle audio and infotainment systems," adding that the company will also "bring other value to RIM in terms of supporting certain unannounced product plans for intelligent peripherals." Lazaridis didn't get much more specific than that, but the notion of "intelligent peripherals" does offer quite a bit of food for thought, as does QNX's past involvement in projects like the LTE Connected Car

Yahoo smites dedicated Mobile group
As mocoNews points out, Google CEO Eric Schmidt made a fascinating (if not obvious) observation at his MWC keynote last month: for his company, mobile's now the primary focus while the desktop plays a secondary role. Yahoo seems to be reaching a similar conclusion on news that it has officially broken up its Mobile unit, instead moving mobile-focused employees into other divisions within the organization -- in other words, mobile will become integral to every group rather than an afterthought pushed to a separate set of bodies. Yahoo's been playing second fiddle to Google and Microsoft in this game -- understandably so, considering both of its biggest competitors have their own mobile operating systems -- but it remains to be seen how big of an impact this'll have
