Samsung Exec launched for US Cellular, suggests WinMo ain’t dead yet
You probably won't hear Microsoft lauding this thing too much -- it's got bigger fish to fry at the moment -- but Samsung and US Cellular have just teamed up to launch the i225 Exec, a simple Windows Mobile 6.5 Standard-based smartphone with a portrait QWERTY keyboard. It's got a 2 megapixel camera and microSD expansion up to 32GB (assuming you can actually track down a 32GB SanDisk card ), but otherwise, this is about as straightforward and basic as a modern smartphone can get -- no frills, just straight-up touchscreen-free legacy WinMo action. It's available right now for $99.95 on a new two-year contract after $70 rebate

Sony Ericsson pushes major firmware update for Xperia X2, all three owners celebrate
Alright, X2 owners, you ready for this? Odds are you aren't, since virtually all of you are east of the Atlantic where it's getting close to bedtime and you're not likely reading this -- and for our New World friends, the North American version is still inexplicably missing in action

Sprint’s HTC Touch Pro2 gets official Windows Mobile 6.5 update
Sprint had promised a first-quarter update for its Touch Pro2 way back in January, and sure enough, it's delivered the Windows Mobile 6.5 boost right on time. It might not have as much punch now that we know everything there is to know about Windows Phone 7 Series, of course, but it's still a pretty big deal -- the Touch Pro2 remains one of the best Microsoft-powered phones you can buy in the States, and unlike AT&T's Tilt2 , it launched with that grubby old WinMo 6.1. It's available now, complete with Sense "enhancements" and a variety of bug fixes -- so if you've got one of these bad boys in your pocket, it seems like a must-grab.

Microsoft posts, un-posts WinMo 6.5 SDK
There's no better proof that you don't need a current SDK to publish apps for Windows Mobile 6.5 than the Marketplace , but that's not to say there aren't specific bits new to 6.5 that devs might like to use -- problem is, there's never been a final SDK that Redmond's made available. That changed -- ever so briefly -- on Friday as the company posted both Standard and Professional Edition SDKs in a variety of languages, but by today, they've been pulled

Sprint outs details on WinMo 6.5 update for Touch Pro2
Windows Mobile 6.5 fever: catch it! AT&T had the good fortune of releasing the Tilt2 late enough to get 6.5 out of the gate, but the other guys have been falling in line ever since: first Verizon , then T-Mobile , and now Sprint's getting in on the action. The bad news is that they're only committing to a vague "by the end of first quarter, 2010" window at this point, but the great news is that this appears to be more than a simple 6.5 bump -- Sprint says that there'll also be "significant enhancements to the Touch Pro2 user interface which will allow additional customization / personalization options and more integration with the applications users access most." We'll take it -- and actually, why don't you just go ahead and make it this mysterious 6.6 while you're at it, guys? Sprint outs details on WinMo 6.5 update for Touch Pro2 originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 14 Jan 2010 17:48:00 EST.

T-Mobile’s Touch Pro2 and Dash 3G signed up for WinMo 6.5 updates this month
So far, it seems like manufacturers (well, HTC and a couple others, anyhow) are staying on the ball about upgrading recent handsets to WinMo 6.5 , and the next deserving pair comes from none other than T-Mobile USA -- the Dash 3G and Touch Pro2 . Of course, the unbranded versions of both of these handsets (the Dash 3G goes by Snap internationally, you may recall) were quite literally the first pre-6.5 devices anywhere to get updated way back in October , so you could make the argument that the American cousins are already way, way behind the curve. Anyhow, the carrier is saying that official updates for both models will be ready for download on the 20th of this month, so get ready to say your final goodbyes to 6.1 and start wishing that you'd received a 6.5.3 update instead

Verizon getting Palm Pre Plus and Android-powered Motorola Devour?
We're still not totally clear on how exactly Verizon intends to enter (or rather, re-enter) the Palm stage in 2010; we know there's definitely a WiFi-equipped CDMA Pixi out there that'll likely find its way into Big Red's clutches, but otherwise, we really need to wait for this event at CES next month. Well, maybe -- we've got another little clue here in the form of some tips to PhoneArena stating that a "Pre Plus" has found its way into the carrier's systems, which fits in nicely with info we'd previously received from one of our trusted sources that Verizon's Pre would be somehow "different" from Sprint's though we don't yet know how. As far as we can tell, this isn't the same as that WiFi Pixi (wouldn't it be confusing if it was?), so we should probably expect at least two webOS models on Verizon over the next few months.

China Mobile announces HTC ‘Qilin’ as Dopod T8388
Filed under: Handsets , HTC , Windows Mobile China Mobile has a vested interest in making sure TD-SCDMA succeeds seeing how it's the only of China's big three carriers to be rolling it out -- and it's not exactly sharing the technology with carriers around the globe -- but money talks, and a portion of the 47 million yuan in subsidies being doled out to advance the standard have gone to making sure this little gem sees the light of day. What you're looking at here is the Dopod T8388 from HTC, a customized version of the still-unannounced Whitestone that appears to take some pages out of the Touch Diamond2's book with WVGA, 5 megapixels of shooting power, WinMo 6.5, and features 3G fashioned just for China Mobile's airwaves. Look for it in the fourth quarter -- question is, will it beat Verizon's version to market

Oh, by the way: August 24, 2009
Filed under: Software , Others , Samsung , Sony Ericsson , ATT , Windows Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS Here's some of the other stuff that happened in the wide world of mobile for Monday, August 24th, 2009: Sony Ericsson is taking its Java runtime downmarket , committing to roll it out to what it's billing the "entry 3G segment." On a completely unrelated note, is it just us, or was the mini-golf game that came on the T610 one of mankind's greatest entertainment achievements of all time? It appears that parts of Europe will be receiving a tweaked version of the Samsung B7320 , creatively rechristened the B7330.
