New HTC device starts leaking piecemeal — is it the Mecha / Incredible HD?

So we've got a crazy theory here: Slashgear just got a couple closeup shots of some heretofore-unknown HTC . So did we -- one in common with Slashgear , one different. Could it be that Taiwan's finest are "leaking" us these shots in an effort to drum up interest going into CES in a couple weeks

Verizon outs Mobile Email 4.0: true push and Exchange support for dumbphones

We imagine that the lion's share of people that need Exchange email access are getting it on a BlackBerry or some other manner of smartphone, but Verizon's covering all its bases here today with the release of Mobile Email 4.0, a dumbphone-compatible release that lets even some of the cheapest handsets in Big Red's lineup (the Octane , Cosmos Touch , and Zeal are specifically called out) in on the corporate action. Besides Exchange support, the release includes a "true push experience," an all-new UI, and Outlook calendar synchronization -- the perfect companion to Exchange email compatibility. It's available now for free if you're on a data plan of at least $15 a month, or for $5 a month with a pay-as-you-go data option.

Droid 2 R2-D2 falls to $200 on contract

With the original Droid 2 going for $149.99 and the newer, faster Droid 2 Global going for $50 more, the R2-D2 edition -- despite its awesomeness -- seemed a little out of place for a whopping $249.99, putting it out of reach of all but the most die-hard (and independently wealthy) Star Wars fanatics. Well, we wouldn't exactly call it a fire sale, but Big Red's cutting us a break now by trimming the price down to a more reasonable $199.99 -- in other words, you've got to choose between a speedier processor and international roaming capability..

Kin Studio closing January 31st, Verizon offers free phones to affected customers

Though the final nail in the Microsoft Kin coffin has yet to be tapped into place, the software that made the pair of ill-fated handsets strangely compelling will soon get the axe. Come January 31st, Kin Studio will be no more, effectively neutering existing Kin phones by removing them from the cloud. They'll still be able to make calls, send SMS, email, browse the web and even stream music via Zune Pass, but their formerly live homescreens will become lifeless, stripped of social networking functionality -- and will actually remain stuck on their very last status update, much like a broken clock

Verizon sucks at Photoshop: the Continuum definitely can’t do this, we checked

Notice something missing from that Continuum there on Big Red's home page? That's right: if this were a real phone, there'd be an arbitrary black bar across the screen somewhere around the young lady's midsection, followed by a "ticker" at the bottom... but instead, just as with the iOS-powered Droid X , they've once again exceeded the bounds of reality with a little help from Adobe products.

Verizon launching LTE on December 5th, two transforming 4G USB modems hitch a wild ride

Sure, Verizon's holding a press conference tomorrow , but unless they've got a secret LTE smartphone or tablet (we can only hope) we've got a fairly good idea what the company will say. We're hearing Verizon will flip the switch on its LTE network on December 5th, unveil a pair of hot new USB modems to take advantage of those supposedly stellar speeds, and launch the SIM cards required to make LTE function in the first place. The gadgets include the LG VL600 thumbstick we've seen before , but also this marvelous-looking Pantech UML290 key, which has not only a slick swiveling case but also a dual-jointed USB port beneath.

Verizon hosting 4G LTE news conference tomorrow to discuss launch plans

Guess what people, Verizon's LTE network launch is really for real and the carrier has now scheduled a news conference for tomorrow where it'll discuss its December plans in more detail. Tony Melone, VZW's chief tech officer, will be on hand to answer any questions beyond the already known plans for 38 metropolitan areas to get the 4G LTE treatment -- accounting for a cool 110 million Americans who'll be able to ride the lightning of faster internet speeds on the move. The event kicks off at 12PM and we'll make sure to tune in, if only to find out what Tony's answer is to the inevitable "what is 4G" question

Verizon gives Droid 2 Global a Facebook shout-out

We joked that the Droid 2 didn't need a marketing campaign , the leaks were getting so much press, and lo and behold, its Droid 2 Global refresh hit shelves without a single official word from Verizon. We figured the wireless carrier had taken our idea to heart and would rely entirely on word of mouth to sell the 1.2GHz worldphone, but if that's the case, Big Red's bending the rules -- it's given the handset a quick Facebook plug to speed that process along. At 215 characters, the status update is a little bit long to retweet, but you can Like it all you want..
