HTC Magic gets Froyo on Vodafone UK
Sure, it might be half a year after the hackers did it , but cut 'em some slack: bureaucracy always makes issuing firmware updates difficult, so we're just happy to see that Vodafone has outed a Froyo update for the HTC Magic at all. The Android 2.2.1-based package appears to contain all the usual goodies -- including tethering support and the ability to move apps to external storage -- which should give these aging beasts a new lease on life. Don't get us wrong: the draw of a new Desire HD, Galaxy S, or Nexus S is probably strong for current Magic owners...

Vodafone UK now selling HTC Desire Z, can be had for free if you play your cards right
Of course, the fact that a high-end smartphone can be scored for free on a European carrier should come as no surprise to anyone -- but in the case of the Desire Z on Vodafone in the UK, you'll be looking at a minimum monthly spend of

Apple reportedly abandons supposed push for integrated SIMs in theoretical European iPhones
This one was all rather rumory to begin with, but play along if you don't mind a pile of unconfirmed reports to start the day. A few weeks back it was said that Apple was working with Gemalto to create a non-removable, software-reconfigurable SIM that would be built right into European iPhones, saving a number of headaches for users and, more importantly, for Apple.

Windows Phone 7 confirmed for all five major UK mobile operators
This will hardly be the most surprising thing you'll hear today, but Microsoft has officially confirmed that all five major operators in the United Kingdom -- Vodafone, O2, T-Mobile, Orange, and Three -- have signed up to offer its Windows Phone 7 handsets when they make their long-awaited debut in the coming weeks . Additionally, the Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4U will also be stocking WP7 devices. Windows Phone 7 device roundup: LG E900 earns GCF certification, HTC Trophy meets Vodafone
You might remember that a huge roadmap document leaked out of HTC late last year; though many of the devices in it never materialized, the fact that the Legend, Bravo, and Photon turned out to be legit (as the Legend , Desire , and HD Mini , respectively) lends credence to the belief that all of the phones in that slide deck were at least on HTC's drawing board at one time or another. One of the more interesting MIA handsets -- the so-called Trophy with WinMo 6.5 and a portrait QWERTY keyboard -- looks like it may have been repurposed as a Windows Phone 7 model thanks to some new shots out of Vodafone Germany's inventory system, which is pretty awesome considering how difficult portrait QWERTY devices are to come by, generally (though it would've had to get a redesign with a higher-res display and faster processor to meet Microsoft's spec guidelines).

Vodafone flips stake in China Mobile for a cool $6.6B
British wireless giant Vodafone has stakes in operators around the world -- perhaps notably its 45 percent share in Verizon Wireless -- but the company has recently made it clear that it plans to aggressively reevaluate all of its holdings, and those words are starting to turn into actions on news that its 3.2 percent piece of China Mobile is no longer. That's significant if for no other reason than the fact that China Mobile is far and away the largest wireless carrier in the world by subscriber count -- a total that exceeds half a billion -- which means that Voda's mere 3.2 percent share, acquired between 2000 and 2002, was valued at roughly $6.6 billion.

Vodafone R201 mobile WiFi hotspot review
Mobile broadband has come a long way since the early (and expensive) attempts at integrating 3G modules into laptops; today, cubicle dwellers are liberated by cheaper mobile data, along with the abundance of 3G dongles and the emerging mobile WiFi (ergo " MiFi ") hotspot devices. It's no secret that Huawei's been flirting with both Three and Vodafone for some time, but it was only recently that the manufacturer also made a MiFi -- the R201 -- for Vodafone (the carrier's lesser-known MiFI 2352 in Spain is from Novatel ).

Vodafone’s Microsoft Surface: like Go Fish for phones
Microsoft worked with Vodafone late last year to deploy Surfaces to a few dozen stores in several European countries (much as AT&T has done in the US), and one of those units happens to be set up at the carrier's IFA booth this week.
