iPhone 4 launch day in Canada: the experience

Our own Myriam Joire was in the thick of things for Canada's iPhone 4 launch today out in lovely Vancouver, and as you might expect, hysteria was reaching... well, iPhone 4 levels. Lines formed early and stayed strong through much of the day, and generally, camaraderie seemed high -- always a good thing when you're standing a foot away from the same handful of people in summer heat for hours on end.

Rogers’ budget-friendly chatr brand launches in Canada

We knew it was coming , and now it's official: Rogers Wireless has today launched its entry-level "chatr" wireless brand for Canadians everywhere -- and by "everywhere," we mean Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, and Ottawa (Montreal is coming soon, as is possibly elsewhere).

Mobilicity gets the green light from CRTC, looks to launch in Toronto soon

Right on cue, the artist formerly known as DAVE Wireless has been given approval to begin operations in Canada. Just as we heard earlier in the year, Mobilicity is looking to add some much-needed competition in the mobile operator space up north, and as predicted, the CRTC has given the initial stamp of approval needed for it to move forward with business operations. The company has to make a few minor changes up the ladder in order to appease the Canadian overlords that regulate this stuff, but the outfit's top brass have stated that they have "no issues" whatsoever in complying

Dropped calls, begone: AT&T expands feds’ Wireless Priority Service to Canada

American carriers have had Wireless Priority Service in place for several years now, giving government officials and first responders improved access to potentially overloaded networks in the event of an emergency or high-density gathering -- but historically, that service has been restricted to American soil. With the Winter Olympics coming right up in Vancouver, AT&T figured it'd have quite a few G-Men strolling north of the border, so it has worked with Rogers this month to roll out priority access for devices roaming in Canada that are already authorized for the service. In a nutshell, that means VIPs strolling around the luge circuit will be able to get through (and stay through) if the crush of humanity gets too much for the poor, overworked cells to handle

Canada’s WIND Mobile making a play for more cash to expand

There's a good deal of excitement about the value that Canada's WIND Mobile is bringing to the table -- that's the luxury of being the scrappy startup with new spectrum in a market dominated by the Old Guard -- but the big problem, of course, is that WIND's native footprint currently covers just Toronto and Calgary. The carrier's backed by Orascom on the strength of a $700 million loan that it says still gives it "ample runway" with upcoming launches in Ottawa, Edmonton, and Vancouver, but to really go big, it's looking to raise some capital from banks right now to grow its network and "develop partnerships" that enable it to reduce or eliminate an estimated $200 to $300 million deficit over the next four years
