Canada’s Galaxy S Froyo updates start rolling out this month

Samsung's probably wishing it could just forget its claim that it'd have Froyo rolled out to all carriers last month , but at least it's providing a little bit of updated guidance to its Canadian users. Turns out Bell's Vibrant and Rogers' Captivate are on track for the middle of this month, while owners of Telus' Fascinate will need to wait a little longer: "early 2011," to be exact, which really isn't exact at all since it could easily mean anywhere between January and, say, April or so. Of course, Gingerbread will be all over the place by then -- and we might even be seeing our first glimpses of Honeycomb -- so be prepared for your version envy to continue unabated.

YouTube Remote app released, controls Leanback on GTV or PC from your Android phone

We weren't completely in love with Google TV's YouTube Leanback experience when we gave the platform a run through , but that could change now that the YouTube Remote app has been released to the Android Market. Users pair the devices simply by signing into YouTube Leanback on the TV or PC and the app on the phone with the same account, then select a video on the phone and send it to the bigger screen with a press of a button.

Microsoft announces Windows Phone 7 sync software for Macs due this year

Even though we kind of saw this coming , it's still nice to hear. Microsoft has gone and done the (nearly) unthinkable, announcing this evening plans for a Mac compatible sync client for its soon-to-be-launched Windows Phone 7 devices. According to a statement from the company issued late in the day, beginning some time "later in 2010" Mac users will be able to live the dream along with their PC counterparts by downloading a beta OS X application which will allow you to sync "select content" from a Mac of their choosing to a Windows Phone.

Yes, the iPhone 4 is broken / No, the iPhone 4 is not broken

The controversy over the iPhone 4's antenna issues continues to grow, particularly after Consumer Reports confirmed yesterday that every iPhone 4 suffers from signal attenuation when the phone is held with the lower left corner covered -- a report that we confirmed with results from our own custom signal metering app. At this point, there's no longer any question in our minds that the iPhone 4's antenna can be made to lose signal by holding it "wrong" -- and we definitely think it's more than a little silly that simply holding the phone in your left hand has been nicknamed the "death grip." That said, however, it's not at all clear what the real-world effects of the antenna issue actually are for most people -- as we've repeatedly said, several iPhone 4s owned by the Engadget staff (including our review unit) have never experienced so much as a single dropped call, while others suffer from signal issues that results in lost calls and unresponsive data in a dramatic way. What's more, at this point Apple's sold well over two million iPhone 4s , and we simply haven't heard the sort of outcry from users that we'd normally hear if a product this high-profile and this popular had a showstopping defect.

HTC says EVO 4G’s 30fps cap on video output can’t be increased

Even though we've seen evidence of a hack that circumvents it, we've been able to corroborate a story over at AndroidGuys this week that the HTC EVO 4G's 30fps cap on screen output is a terminal condition -- so says HTC, anyhow. The official story is that the cap was necessitated by the phone's support for HDMI-out, and there's no way the company could craft a software update to nix the limitation. Of course, as usual, we have every faith that the xda-developers community is going to magically take care of this in a way that's easy enough for at least power users to install -- but until then, you'll just need to deal with a frame rate that's just barely perceptible to the human eye.

Android port for HTC HD2 overcomes big hurdle, finally getting close

The great thing about the HD2 is that it remains one of the most gorgeous pieces of smartphone hardware ever released -- but as long as it's saddled with the dead OS walking known as Windows Mobile 6.5 , its stature in the power user community is perpetually stuck in first gear, no matter how pretty HTC has managed to make it. To that end, some of those very same power users have been working tirelessly to salvage the beast and shoehorn Android on there, but they've been tripped up by some errors involving the phone's Snapdragon core and the so-called HaRET tool used to boot Linux from Windows CE-based devices that have made a proper port seem all but impossible. Those hurdles have been overcome in the past couple days, though, which means a marginally consumer-friendly Android build might finally be within reach -- and considering that there's no proper EVO 4G equivalent from HTC in Europe yet, this project could have an awful lot of value

Seidio 3200mAh Nexus One battery hands-on

We just took delivery of a 3200mAh powerplant for the Nexus One from the extended battery specialists over at Seidio , and if we had to sum the kit up in a single phrase, we'd say this: it's not for the faint of heart. Gone are the Nexus One's gentle sloping curves around back, replaced with a giant soft-touch shell designed specifically to accommodate the hulking cell within. We haven't had a chance to stress-test it and see exactly how much more real-world life it gives us against the OEM battery's comparatively meager 1400mAh, but we know already that only the hardest-core users -- road warriors who can't be tied down long enough to slip in some extra juice here and there -- should be considering this behemoth of a kit, especially considering the $70 asking price and the fact that it'll preclude you from using Google's dock.

Droid’s Android 2.1 update going to ‘a small number’ of users tomorrow

Possibly confirming those leaks suggesting that the first volley of Droid updates to Android 2.1 would be limited to just a quarter million folks, Verizon just shot out a statement to let everyone know that the over-the-air push is "being deployed to a small number of Verizon Wireless test users tomorrow afternoon." Beyond that, no dates are given for the rest of us to get in on the action -- probably because Verizon and Motorola need to see how the first group manages before sending out the remainder -- so for the moment, just hope that you're one of these incredibly blessed "test users" and stay tuned. Droid's Android 2.1 update going to 'a small number' of users tomorrow originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 17 Mar 2010 14:49:00 EST.
