Palm Pre 2 swims across the English Channel in three days, launches November 12th in the UK
French citizens have been enjoying webOS 2.0 with their morning baguette for over two weeks, but it's one step closer to home today -- Pocket-lint reports that the Palm Pre 2 will launch in the United Kingdom this Friday. What's more, the 1GHz handset won't be chained to a British carrier, but rather released into the wild completely SIM-free, which probably means future Just Typists will need to buy it direct from HP . As for the promised pre-orders for US students , we're sorry to say they've failed to materialize; the Facebook page that once clearly stated "preorders begin 11/8" now simply reads "Palm Pre 2 coming soon." Soon enough for you

OTI report finds US and Canada have the most expensive cellphone plans, India and Hong Kong the cheapest
It's far from the first study to compare the cost of cellphone plans around the world, but this new report from the New America Foundation's Open Technology Initiative (which counts Google CEO Eric Schmidt as a board member) does look to be a bit more thorough than most, which might help to dissuade some of the criticism levied at past studies from the likes of the CTIA.

UAE says BlackBerry is now compliant with regulations, free to rock on
The latest thrilling installment in BlackBerry's Middle East saga has turned out not to be so thrilling after all. Having set an October 11 deadline for RIM to comply with its "telecommunications regulatory framework," the United Arab Emirates is today reporting that the BlackBerry maker has managed to make the necessary changes with plenty of time to spare.

Saudi Arabia pleased by RIM’s concession, says BlackBerry messaging can stay for now
The forty-eight hour deadline came and went, but Saudi Arabia didn't pull the plug -- citing a "positive development" in RIM's efforts to appease Saudi regulators, the country has allowed BlackBerry messaging services to continue for the time being.

RIM averts Saudi Arabia’s BlackBerry messaging ban, negotiates surrender
It took two long years for India to (allegedly) tap BlackBerry traffic , but Saudi Arabia may not have to wait nearly as long; the Wall Street Journal reports that RIM has all but agreed to set up a local server in the country. While we've no details yet on what the deal entails, an unnamed Saudi telecom official said negotiations are already in the final stages. Sorry, RIM, but it looks like Saudi Arabia called your bluff

LightSquared does LTE and satellite connectivity wholesale, Nokia Siemens to do the heavy lifting (video)
Chances are you're a little sick of different carriers having different qualities of service in different areas of the country, and have probably wondered at some point: "Can't we all just get along?" The answer is no, we can't, but LightSquared is looking to launch something of an alternative. It's starting a multi-billion dollar wholesale LTE deployment that will run coast-to-coast in the United States, covering 90 percent of the population by 2015.

HTC EVO 4G overtakes Palm Pre for best-selling launch day on Sprint
Considering the lackluster career that Palm's inaugural webOS duo ultimately endured on Sprint, it's wild to think back to those heady days when the Pre was the carrier's best launch day performer in history -- but alas, no longer. As you might've expected, the mighty EVO 4G has shown the Pre the door to take its own place in the record books, a mark we're not surprised to see considering the activation issues many customers saw on Friday as Sprint's systems buckled under the load.

LG Ally release pushed back a week for reasons unknown
You remember those Android 2.1 -powered LG Allys that were supposed to go on sale with Big Red earlier this week ? Yeah, well, they didn't, and Verizon's site is still showing them as pre-orders. We're not sure what's going on there, but pre-orders are being extended through the 26th with sales commencing on the 27th; folks that have already pre-ordered the phone are apparently getting emails explaining the situation and letting them know that they'll be "the first to receive the phone upon initial availability on or after May 27th." The "or after" part there seems to be giving them a loophole in case they need another delay -- so this could be a last-minute software issue, supply problems, some sort of wacky marketing stunt, or a stunning heist involving the theft of every Ally that has been imported to the United States thus far

RIM opens doors wide to the BlackBerry Beta Zone
There's really nothing quite like getting an app or indeed an entire OS before your buddies do, even if that app is so buggy to make it unusable. RIM 's giving you the chance to be that shinning star among your friends -- a geek lord if you will -- with the launch of its new BlackBerry Beta Zone. Getting on board is dead easy: if you live in Canada, the US, or the United Kingdom, simply sign up, download stuff, test said stuff, and provide some feedback
