EVO 4G gets new firmware update: lots of app refreshes
No, for goodness' sake, it's not Gingerbread ! Okay, now that we've gotten past that, Sprint just cut loose a new EVO 4G update that bundles updated versions of Telenav, visual voicemail, Sprint Zone, and Sprint TV, along with a sprinkling of crapware in the form of a new game trial. You've also got Blockbuster and Kindle apps on board, a new Scan Now widget that seems to assist with locating a 4G signal, and -- this is pretty awesome -- the addition of Swype , which means you'll no longer need to install the off-ROM Swype beta. Want the goods?

Google rolls out NFC-equipped Places business kits, muscles in on location-based territory in Portland
Yelp may be the raconteur of restaurant recommendations and Foursquare the cardinal of check-ins, but Google has an ace up its sleeve: NFC chips . The company's embedded near-field communications chips into each and every one of these "Recommended on Google Places" window stickers, which you'll be able to trigger with a shiny new Nexus S -- just hold your handset up to the black dot, and voila, your phone gets a "tag." Google's now distributing the signs on a trial basis to Portland, Oregon businesses as part of a larger Google Places kit, though it doesn't explain how (or if) they'll be able to program the chips

Clearwire’s first LTE trial results are in: 90Mbps down, 30Mbps up
Yes, that's right: we said LTE , not WiMAX . The patron saint of WiMAX in the US has long toyed with the idea of switching over to the LTE technology path in the long term, and the results of its first live LTE trial -- based in Phoenix -- are looking pretty promising

FCC offers ‘simple’ ‘tips’ for avoiding pesky early termination fees
The government is just about the last place we'd look for helpful pointers on much of anything, much less when shopping for a new phone -- but that didn't stop the FCC's Consumer Task Force from whipping up a PDF of things you can to do prevent yourself from getting burned with a multi-hundred dollar early termination fee when buying the handset of your wildest dreams. There's nothing in here that isn't obvious to a seasoned phone buyer -- buy the phone at full price instead, ask about a trial period, look into proration, and so on -- but it goes without saying that these are the kinds of tidbits average consumers should know before setting foot in the store.

O2, Huawei team up for UK’s first trial LTE network
It kinda pales next to TeliaSonera's commercial launch , but give O2 some credit here -- they've just become the first carrier in the UK to trial "live" LTE services. Powered by Huawei gear on the back end, O2's hot new network hit a peak of 150Mbps on the downlink -- a speed we can't imagine seeing in real-world scenarios when 4G goes live on a large scale, but gives us hope nonetheless -- and is being used to demonstrate the kinds of things us lay folk will want to accomplish with LTE like video streaming, high-quality video calling, gaming, and torrenting New Moon (no, not really) at a company showcase. End users aren't able to sign up for the action just yet, but if you want to feel the power of LTE wash over your body like a cool wave, we might recommend heading to Slough -- O2's British headquarters and the location of the trial network.
