One Mr. Romin has seemingly unearthed the solution, which involves a Lilliput FA1042 touchpanel, a Belkin AV dock adapter cable and a critical piece of software by the name of Centrafuse. Working in conjunction, he has enabled his monitor to actually control the iPhone, and when firing up a YouTube video, the content plays back on the big screen while the controls remain visible on the handset. It’s a nifty setup, for sure, and we’re downright excited to see this rig get installed in a vehicle far too small for American roads in a fortnight or so. For now, catch it working in action just past the break.

So there’s no recent sign of an official multitouch update ever coming to the maligned X10 from Sony Ericsson, but you know how it goes: when a manufacturer fails to step up to the plate, a hacker with a heart of gold (or two) usually does so in its place. So it goes in this case, with folks on xda-developers showing off some very, very rudimentary multitouch capability on video. The hack isn’t available to the public yet — and considering that Sony Ericsson claimed multitouch wasn’t technically possible with this device, there’s no guarantee it’ll become good enough to use — but it’s a promising sign. Follow the break for a video of it working… kind of.

Speaking of “less expensive,” we’d say the Solstice II falls into that category at $29.99 on contract when it launches this Sunday, November 7th in AT&T corporate stores and online.

Sometimes a mod is more than just a mod: it’s a manifesto. When Phawx over at BrainLazy decided to take an X-Acto knife to his Epic 4G’s keypad, he knew what he was doing: both challenging Apple’s place in the world of cellphone-based gaming and encouraging other manufacturers to step up to the plate. Although early on in the design process he mocked up some plastic controller pieces to replace the factory keypad altogether, by the time it came to try the thing out he realized that by simply pulling out the unused keys and making a few minor (very minor) cosmetic adjustments he could give his touchscreen handset a gamepad slider more eminently more playable than your Droid’s Game Gripper — and eminently less mythical than your PSP Phone. Video after the break.

If you have even the slightest inclination towards Mysophobia then please, do yourself a favor and stop reading now. A Stanford University study found that if you put a virus on a touchscreen surface then about 30 percent of it will make the jump to the fingertips of anyone who touches it. From there it goes into the eyes, mouth, or nose — whichever face-hole is in most urgent need of a rub. And just to drive the point home, the Sacramento Bee adds this little nugget from an unspecified British study: “Mobile phones harbor 18 times more bacteria than a flush handle in a typical men’s restroom.” Eww. You know, sometimes it’s best not to know how the sausage is made.

When the Huawei Ascend launches on prepaid carrier Cricket Wireless later this month, it will cost $150. That’s not after a rebate or with a two-year agreement, mind you — for three portraits of Ulysses S. Grant, you actually own the phone. Of course, you always get what you pay for to some degree, and the Ascend certainly isn’t a top-tier device — it’s a humble HVGA handset made of cheap plastic that felt like it wouldn’t survive a drop. The 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen was dull and actually slightly rough to the touch, and the 3.2 megapixel fixed-focus camera around back doesn’t shoot VGA video (just QIF), let alone quality snapshots. Still, it’s got physical buttons in all the right places (including a bendy metal Send / Menu / Back / End panel on the bottom) and a surprisingly responsive Android 2.1 UI with a few neat quirks — like a nine-panel home screen — so we could honestly see this EV-DO Rev. A handset being a pretty fantastic Android for first-time users. We’d choose it over the Motorola Citrus in a heartbeat, that’s for sure, especially when Cricket gets its Sprint roaming agreement in order later this year. Of course, that’s assuming the Huawei Ideos doesn’t arrive at an even cheaper pricepoint. We’ve got a brief video of the Ascend after the break, as well as a MiFi-like Huawei device called the Crosswave — won’t you give it a look?

Looking to get an Android device on AT&T? Then you’re soon going to have a few more options to consider — the carrier has just announced three new Android-based phones from Motorola. Those include the touchscreen-only Bravo (not to be confused with the HTC Bravo), and the QWERTY-equipped Flipout and Flipside, all of which will ship with Android 2.1 and the latest version of MOTOBLUR. Of the three, the Bravo is the highest-end, with it packing a 3.7-inch 854 x 480 display, an 800MHz TI OMAP 3610 processor, a 3-megapixel camera, and DLNA support for media streaming. The Flipout and Flipside, on the other hand, each pack a 720MHz TI OMPA 3410 processor, the same 3-megapixel camera, and a 2.8-inch QVGA and 3.1-inch HVGA screen, respectively. Somewhat notably, the Flipside also boasts a surprisingly large trackpad, which AT&T says will let you navigate with one hand while keeping your fingers off the screen (though it does, in fact, have a touchscreen). Look for the Flipout to be available first on October 17th for $79.99 on a two-year contract, while the Flipside and Bravo should be each available before the holiday season for $99.99 and $129.99, respectively.

It’ll be fun. We promise. If you’ve been calling the underside of a rock home for the past decade or so, you may have missed out on a Chinese outfit by the name of Meizu. For all intents and purposes, the company has done its darnedest to copy Apple in every respect, particularly with the software on its M8 and M9 smartphones. Strangely, we’ve never actually heard confirmation that Cupertino’s best lawyers were breathing down Meizu’s neck… until now. As the story goes, Meizu CEO Jack Wong’s forum postings have been rather tense of late, and one in particular seems to explain why: Apple’s all up in his grille. The details are hidden beneath a good bit of pent-up rage, but what is clear is a mention of Apple’s lawyers and their “unreasonable negotiation tactics.” In essence, Jack finds it absurd that Apple could claim rights to the touchscreen smartphone form factor, and while Apple could only serve a relative few in China, he (obviously) expects Meizu to serve far more. We won’t pretend to be sad on Jack’s behalf — we mean, the guy had it coming — but we can’t shake the looming depression when thinking of a world with no future Meizu devices to chuckle at.

RIM has yet to officially announce the upcoming Style 9670 flip, but the leakfest continues today with a handful of new videos — professionally-produced ones this time — that show off key features of the UI and how to use them. Unlike the Torch, the Style lacks a touchscreen — it just wouldn’t be prudent in a clamshell form factor — which means we’re seeing just what it’s like to navigate the finer points of BlackBerry 6′s user interface with an optical pad (and secondary display) alone on a larger, portrait-oriented display. We’re hopeful that RIM’s new platform has a certain… well, a certain “something” on non-touchscreen devices that the Torch lacks, but time will tell, we suppose. Follow the break for the full video series.
