Rogers adds ‘data sharing’ plans, will carry both WiFi and cellular versions of BlackBerry PlayBook

With the precedent the Galaxy Tab has set, it was an open question whether carriers would embrace the WiFi version of RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook -- after all, it's a little harder to fully monetize a data plan on a device that lacks its own cellular modem. Thing is, the WiFi version is the first one that's going to be available; RIM hasn't given much guidance yet on when the cellular version will follow on -- and RIM doesn't have much of a distribution channel outside its carrier partners. Well, Rogers has thrown its hat in the ring today at its TabLife event in Toronto, where it has been chatting up the success of the tablets it's sold so far (the Tabs apparently won't stay on shelves) and noting that it will be carrying both versions of the PlayBook as they become available

Rogers announces plans for budget-minded ‘Chatr’ wireless brand

Well, it looks like Canadians will soon have yet another discount wireless brand to consider -- Rogers has just officially announced plans to launch a new budget-minded "Chatr" brand to compete with the likes of Wind , Mobilicity and Public Mobile . Yes, that's the same Rogers that already has the Fido discount brand, but it says that the "launch of a third brand mirrors many other industries like the hospitality and retail sectors and is designed to offer Canadians more choice." The official announcement follows some rumors and leaks that have been circulating as of late, which suggested that Chatr would initially launch in Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver on July 5th, although those details still haven't yet been confirmed by Rogers. Rogers announces plans for budget-minded 'Chatr' wireless brand originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 02 Jul 2010 18:38:00 EST

Public Mobile launching in mid-May: ‘you’re not going to see us at Yorkville’

Canada's Public Mobile -- one of the wireless start-ups to benefit from the country's AWS spectrum auction -- has started detailing its launch plans this week behind its contemporaries at WIND Mobile and Mobilicity . These guys are being totally forthcoming about the fact that they're targeting the lower end of the market, a segment they claim to be "underserved" by the big guys (we're sure Koodo, Fido, and Virgin would all disagree) -- even going so far as to make their launch announcement in an area of Toronto ominously described as "hardscrabble." So what's the deal? Stores are open immediately to the tune of 15 in Toronto and another 10 in Montreal, the only markets Public Mobile says it's going to target for now, with service launching in mid-May to the tune of CAD $40 (about $39) a month for unlimited talk and text.

Canada’s WIND Mobile making a play for more cash to expand

There's a good deal of excitement about the value that Canada's WIND Mobile is bringing to the table -- that's the luxury of being the scrappy startup with new spectrum in a market dominated by the Old Guard -- but the big problem, of course, is that WIND's native footprint currently covers just Toronto and Calgary. The carrier's backed by Orascom on the strength of a $700 million loan that it says still gives it "ample runway" with upcoming launches in Ottawa, Edmonton, and Vancouver, but to really go big, it's looking to raise some capital from banks right now to grow its network and "develop partnerships" that enable it to reduce or eliminate an estimated $200 to $300 million deficit over the next four years
