AT & T WiFi launched the initiative to new regions of Times Square, Rockefeller Center and St. Patrick’s Cathedral
AT & T has promised to launch some new WiFi locations in the coming months, starting from new areas of access to New York’s Times Square, Rockefeller Center and St. Patrick’s Cathedral – all the big tourist traps. Times Square AT & T offering free WiFi (lauched in May), but it makes the region a bigger part of the new initiative. The company also announced that it intends to launch WiFi locations in San Francisco, and from the Embarcadero Center, sometime later this year. Times Square, decorated with WiFi, and two new regions to launch a “coming days”, which we know is not very special, but hey, this is the best we can do. Full press release after the break.

FCC to auction off deadbeat bidders’ 700MHz spectrum on July 19th, 2011
If there's one thing we've learned from our stratospheric rise in smartphone adoption over the past several years (with no end in sight), it's that we can never have enough spectrum to run data services for them -- just ask the chairman of the FCC , the president of the CTIA , or pretty much anyone who's ever tried to load Engadget on an iPhone in Times Square. To that end, we're excited to see that the FCC has slated another round of 700MHz spectrum -- the pure gold that Verizon, AT&T, and others are using for LTE deployments -- but we wouldn't get too excited, because it's actually just a few blocks left over from the last auction that went unsold or unpaid

Opera Mobile 10.1 for Symbian turns to a brilliant shade of gold
Opera has done a pretty commendable job of keeping its latest, greatest wares up to date on most of the major mobile platforms, and here's another checkbox they can tick: Opera Mobile 10.1 has now gone final for Symbian. Of course, this isn't to be confused with the lighter-weight Opera Mini product that went into beta for Symbian last month -- this is the full package that's capable of operating without a proxy. What's new?

Ovi Store hits 3 million downloads a day
Nokia's chatting up the fact that it just broke the 3 million download per day milestone in its Ovi Store , backed up by 400,000 new developers in the last 12 months alone and a total of 92 developers who've crossed the 1 million total download mark. Interestingly, the download rate pales in comparison to Apple's App Store, which is raking in over 17 million downloads a day at last count -- despite the fact that Nokia still dominates market share and boasts Ovi Store compatibility with some 126 (yes, 126) models

Microsoft and Adobe CEOs meet, purportely plan world domination
Like any two technology behemoths, Adobe and Microsoft have certainly had their ups and downs . But now that Google and Apple are looming over them in a number of ways, it seems as if the two may be courting one another in order to help re-level the playing field.

Disney converting Droid Eris into GPS tour guide (update: video!)
If you shed a tear when Verizon put the Droid Eris out to pasture , it's time to dry your eyes; it seems the handset's found greener fields in Florida, at Epcot Center to be precise. That's right, Walt Disney World is reportedly testing out Verizon's HTC Hero as a GPS navigator and tour guide for the entire park, complete with shopping discounts, special bonuses and up-to-the-minute wait times for rides. How or when you'll get your hands on one is presently up in the air, though the man who snapped these shots told Mickey Updates the phones may be an inexpensive addition to your vacation -- perhaps like the $10 BREW-based Mobile Magic application Verizon and Disney introduced last year

Mark Papermaster leaves Apple for reasons and destinations unknown (update)
We're not quite sure chip guru Mark Papermaster ever truly settled into his role as Apple's SVP of Devices Hardware Engineering in the year and four months since he finally walked through the door , but after the recent antenna troubles someone decided that he wasn't going to work there anymore. The New York Times reports that Papermaster has left and Bob Mansfeld (SVP of Mac Engineering) will assume his role. So far, there's been no official statement as to why the departure is occurring, whether he was ousted or left of his own volition (again, though he oversaw the new iPhone, his background is in processor design ) but either way, the former SVP's picture and bio have already been removed from Apple's website.

Samsung Behold II finally gets Android 1.6 update
Yes, yes, we know you'd rather get Eclair or Froyo -- but sometimes you've got to be happy with what you've got, and this is one of those times. As far as we can tell, Samsung hasn't budged on its commitment to sunset the Behold II's upgrade path with Donut , but at least 1.6 is finally trickling into the hands of owners this week via a rolling over-the-air update that should wrap up on the 25th

Apple’s A4 is like Samsung’s S5, except where it’s not
Though the Apple iPad and the Samsung Wave most assuredly share the same brain , EE Times would like you to know there's more to a chip than its core -- analyzing Apple's system-on-a-chip designs in detail back to early iPhones, the publication noticed that Cupertino's silicon both has custom design quirks on top of ARM and shows heavy influence from Samsung as well. EE Times claims that while the A4 and Samsung S5PC110 are similar, there are certainly differences, enough to call the A4 a custom design. Essentially, Apple has a taken a one-size-fits-all product originally engineered to meet the needs of a broad range of OEMs and reduced its complexity, footprint, and cost to match Apple's particular goals
