We’re horrible at getting gifts and cards to their recipients on time, usually showing up in mailboxes at least a day late. Samsung, it seems, is in a similar boat with its Epic 4G. According to Phone Arena, Android 2.2.1 (you know, Froyo) will begin rolling out to the handset on December 26. For real this time. Like, really real. Given all that history we’re a little bit skeptical about this happening on that date, but don’t let that stop you from setting some milk and cookies next to your charging stand on the 26th. Worst case: morning cookies for you on the 27th!

How many dedicated LTE -capable USB modems does Verizon need? At least three, apparently, because we've just been sent shots of Novatel's upcoming USB551L that looks perhaps a tad glossier and sleeker than the Pantech and LG models that have preceded it . Hard to say from the spec sheet here, but it looks like there's at least a chance this is LTE-only without CDMA / EV-DO fallback since there's no explicit mention of it; unlikely considering how small Verizon's LTE footprint is for the time being, but you never know.

How many dedicated LTE-capable USB modems does Verizon need? More importantly, there is explicit mention of Mac support, something the carrier’s current options lack. No word on a release date or pricing, but we imagine it won’t be long now that these dummy units — which you can see in the gallery below — are floating around.

We have no idea why Samsung's having such a hard time delivering its overdue promised Froyo upgrades worldwide for the Galaxy S series, but it's not looking any easier for them this weekend: the only Canadian Galaxy S to get upgraded so far, Bell's Vibrant, has just had its update pulled. Seems a healthy number of users attempting the upgrade using Sammy's Kies desktop software ended up with inaccessible internal storage, which sucks for a variety of obvious reasons -- and that would be the apparent reason for the removal of the update.

Seems a healthy number of users attempting the upgrade using Sammy’s Kies desktop software ended up with inaccessible internal storage, which sucks for a variety of obvious reasons — and that would be the apparent reason for the removal of the update. Here’s the official statement:

“There have been intermittent issues reported during the firmware upgrade process with Kies for the Samsung Galaxy S i9000M series of phones. Samsung’s development team is currently aware of this issue and working towards a solution. Accordingly, The firmware update feature, which affects the ability to upgrade to Android 2.2, is temporarily disabled until a solution is released. We apologize for the inconvenience.”

Maybe we can just go straight to Gingerbread or Honeycomb at this point?

Two video chats enter the ring, only one comes out. In this corner it’s ooVoo Mobile, a portable version of the (somewhat) popular desktop video chat application that will let up to six users simultaneously swap bitrate over 3G, 4G, or WiFi — but only if you have an HTC Evo or Samsung Epic. In the other corner it’s Yahoo! Messenger, with version 1.3 adding video calls and similarly limited device support, though this time it’s the myTouch 4G and the Evo getting the nod. So, Android owners, which of these is going to reign supreme? Or, are you going to tap out and stay cozy with Qik? Hit the Android Market now and place your bets.

Say hello to the version 2.0 of SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone and iPod Touch devices, which improves over v1.2 and its 3G streaming by adding the high quality video and new program guide features seen in the iPad version . Fortunately, this time Sling hasn't made any of its older hardware obsolete, while taking advantage of the new HQ streams will require a SOLO or PRO-HD box (and minimum 800 kbps WiFi / 500 kbps 3G connection) older Slingboxes will still work, just with lower quality video.
Say hello to the version 2.0 of SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone and iPod Touch devices, which improves over v1.2 and its 3G streaming by adding the high quality video and new program guide features seen in the iPad version. Fortunately, this time Sling hasn’t made any of its older hardware obsolete, while taking advantage of the new HQ streams will require a SOLO or PRO-HD box (and minimum 800 kbps WiFi / 500 kbps 3G connection) older Slingboxes will still work, just with lower quality video. Check the screens for a peek at the new look or just head over to iTunes, grab the new version and let us know how it’s working out.

[Thanks, David]

Last time he did this he burned the then unannounced Nokia N8 to the ground. He’s coy with any details but the “I do not like this device” machine translation is pretty telling as is that AT&T logo. One more pic of the backside 8 megapixel shooter after the break as we brace for things to come.

One of the greatest treats a human can know is to visit Google’s home page only to discover that the company has decided to celebrate some obscure birthday, anniversary, or special event by dressing up its logo in a creative way. Google takes these so-called doodles very, very seriously — so seriously, in fact, that it has taken the time to let us know that those doodles will now be available on your phone. No longer will you need to see a Google logo fashioned from meat, vegetables, and pie on your desktop, only to suffer through the normal array of colored letters when you go mobile. You’re welcome, America.

Witness our last review of an Android smartphone from Motorola and you’ll know what we think of Motoblur. Then again, we reckon we could get over our qualms when Moto’s skin is stretched out over this delectable-looking, supposedly Tegra 2-boasting smartphone. The Olympus has been snapped again, this time by someone claiming to have bought it at a flea market, and it now shows off an HDMI output alongside the standard microUSB connector, both of which are planted on the side of what’s looking like a very thin device indeed. The Olympus is carrying over the Defy‘s penchant for minimal bezel up front, though now that we have something to judge its size against, it does look to be equipped with at least a 4-inch screen. Pretty good competition for LG’s Star, we’re sure you’ll agree. If only we knew when it might launch…

Though we loved the Defy, we were quick to admonish Motorola for having the stones to release a phone this late in the game running Eclair; after all, Froyo’s been on retail devices since June, so rocking 2.1 on a new release is just a little insulting. How long is the wait going to be until we’re upgraded? Hard to say — but thanks to a helpful tweet, O2 Germany seems to have narrowed it down to the first quarter of next year, which means some time between January and March. Now, that doesn’t mean T-Mobile USA customers will be getting it in the same time frame, of course — but as with many Motorolas, we think the main challenge is updating Blur, and once that happens, updates should start to trickle out around the world in relatively rapid succession. Famous last words, we know.

[Thanks, Mario]

Update: As commenter Tiny_kawa notes, Motorola’s official roadmap is listed here, which lists second quarter ’11 for the Defy’s upgrade in Europe — so we’re wondering if O2′s getting early dibs, or if they’re just being optimistic. Sadly, there’s no listing for T-Mobile USA’s version just yet.

Motorola Defy ‘expected’ to get Android 2.2 in Q2 2011, says O2 Germany originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue, 23 Nov 2010 13:42:00 EST.
