Nokia kicks off second Push N900 contest with red, white, blue flavor
You may recall that Nokia's first Push contest resulted in an absolutely delightful mashup of an N900 and a Speak 'n Spell (although we always hate to see a vintage Speak 'n Spell bite the dust). Problem is, Americans weren't really represented among the finalists, so the company has decided to do a second round with a distinctly American flair -- and this time, there's cold, hard cash involved. Push N900 Mod in the USA (it's a mouthful, we know) runs through February 15, during which interested parties need to get their submissions for creative N900 uses and hacks to Nokia; finalists will be chosen and given support to turn their ideas into reality.

Verizon prices Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus — offers a free Pixi Plus for limited time
Palm has gone and spilled its Verizon pricing info, and the news is pretty encouraging. The Pre Plus is hitting shelves at a cent under $150, closely followed by the Pixi Plus at $99.99 -- both after $100 mail-in rebate and on two-year commitments. Available to buy from this coming Monday, the new handsets are also incentivized with a free Pixi Plus coming with every purchase -- a limited offer running until February 14.

Motorola MOTOROI demoed on video in very cozy quarters
You don't typically get this close to your phone unless you're about to put it against the side of your face, but hey, we figure a little intimate time with a device you use this much can't hurt, now, can it? Here we've got one of the first high-def hands-on experiences of Motorola's latest Android set, the MOTOROI , loaded with a Korean ROM in preparation for its upcoming launch on SK Telecom.

Amazon MP3 swings open doors to UK in Android 2.1
Direct access to Amazon's MP3 store from Android is old hat for American customers -- it's been preloaded on the time-weathered G1 since day one -- but it's still a foreign concept for users in a host of other countries, notably the UK where they've been enjoying Google's platform for nearly as long as the Yankees have. That looks poised to change, though, with the introduction of Android 2.1 now that Brits running Nexus Ones have played around with their handsets long enough to discover that the Amazon MP3 app is preloaded and quoting prices in -- yes, you guessed it -- pounds sterling. There's yet to be official word from Amazon on the matter so it's unclear whether pre-2.1 phones will ultimately be able to get in on the action -- but in the meantime, anyone desperate for access had better cobble up the quid for a Nexus import.

Sprint wastes no time touting its unlimited plans over Verizon’s
Not since AT&T called an audible to offer unlimited voice the same day as Verizon have we seen this kind of hustle out of a big-four carrier -- though it's only ending in hastily-prepared PR this time around, not any material changes in calling plans. Sprint is countering Verizon's new offerings announced this morning with a release of its own, running the numbers to find that its Everything Data plans at the 450, 700, and unlimited voice bucket levels should save users about $240 a year against Big Red, while comparing Sprint's 1,500-minute family plan with unlimited data to Verizon's 1,400-minute plan yields savings of about $600 annually. For better or worse, Verizon and AT&T have historically viewed themselves as "premium" nationals with justification for charging higher rates than smaller rivals Sprint and T-Mobile -- but depending on where you go, what you do, and how you use the service, the cheaper guys could end up working every bit as well, if not better.

Nokia N900 gets its second firmware update this week
Don't get us wrong, enabling the Ovi Store was a pretty sweet add-on in the last update -- but the second N900 push in just a single week features a list of fixes and changes that should put smiles on a few owners' faces, too (and a few devs' faces, for that matter, while they wait for this payment bug to get patched up).

Nokia 5800 firmware update adds kinetic scrolling, revised home screen
Nokia has started rolling out what appears to be a major new firmware build for the venerable 5800 XpressMusic , bringing a couple key features to the phone that inaugurated S60 5th Edition over a year ago. And seriously, by all accounts, this is a big one -- in addition to kinetic scrolling, the v40 release apparently brings the 5800's home screen up to spec with the 5530's and an automatic switch to QWERTY mode input when using the handset in landscape. This would certainly seem like the perfect time to put that new Windows 7-capable NSU client to the test, too, since it's apparently not yet available over the air -- and if we had to guess, not all product codes of the 5800 are seeing it yet either, so stay close and check often until you manage to grab it.
