Apple looking to hire iOS navigation engineers, first test is to find way around One Infinite Loop

Is Apple looking to take it to Google and its uppity Maps app? That certainly looks to be the case, with AppleInsider noticing that the company has four new job listings which specify "Computational Geometry or Graph Theory" and "experience developing navigation software" as "valuable knowledge." The obvious implications here are that Apple's looking to craft first-party, full-fledged, turn-by-turn navigation and bring it to its GPS-equipped devices, but maybe the company's previous new hires simply got lost a lot and this is just an attempt to nip that problem in the bud.

AT&T tells Samsung Focus customers not to buy microSD cards yet, wait for ‘certified’ ones (update: random access speed is key)

We'd put forth the theory that Microsoft and Samsung would eventually certify microSD cards specifically for use with Windows Phone 7 devices after they finally came to terms with the fact that the microSD drama surrounding the Focus was going to lead directly to broken devices and broken hearts -- and sure enough, that's exactly what's happening. We just received this statement from AT&T, pointing out that the platform is extremely finicky when it comes to microSD selection -- so finicky, in fact, that only "Certified for Windows Phone 7" cards should be used. No such cards are currently available.

T-Mobile customers being mistakenly shipped Micro SIMs, just begging to get shoved into iPhones

You've got to admit, this is a little weird: we've received a number of tips today about T-Mobile USA customers being shipped Micro SIMs rather than the typical Mini SIMs. We've gotten a picture of just such a module (see above), and you can plainly see it's not a hybrid -- it can't be snapped out as a Mini SIM, meaning that unless you've got an adapter lying around, you need to head into the store to get it swapped out for the right kind. The only consumer devices out there in any measurable quantity right now that make use of Micro SIMs are, of course, the iPad and iPhone 4 -- and when you pair this up with the fact that T-Mobile stores are starting to sell iPhone cables right now, the situation is starting to get wacky.

Sony Ericsson Z-System: the PlayStation Phone’s gaming platform?

A bumper crop of circumstantial evidence surrounding the Android-based PlayStation Phone is starting to come together today -- when it rains, it pours, as they say -- and one particularly interesting thread suggests that the ecosystem surrounding the device might be called "Z-System." An astute tipster notes that the term appears in the upper left of one of our shots, which maps to a domain -- z-system.com, naturally -- that's owned by Sony Ericsson. Turns out the company also holds trademarks for Z-System in the US and Benelux trademark offices (among others, presumably) that were filed (and approved) this year, and the filing category includes "software for interacting or playing with electronic or video games," not hardware, so that strongly suggests we're looking at a platform here. We suppose it's possible that this specific device will be called Z-System, but we're going to float the theory that its actually underlying gaming platform that'll bear that name -- possibly a premium game store and set of software libraries that together will earn a device the Z-System badge.

Sprint Epic 4G update delayed by ‘administrative issues,’ consumer rage released on schedule

And this, folks, is a lesson of what not to do if you're a major carrier with a majorly perturbed user base. In a way, this sort of feels like the Instinct update debacle all over again, with users claiming that a promised software update was being held beyond the 30 day return window in order to keep contracts alive.

iPhone 4 confirms June 24 date with O2, Orange and Vodafone in UK

Good news for non-America: O2 UK has become the first international carrier to confirm it'll have the iPhone 4 ready for purchase and adoration on launch day, June 24 . After the iPad gave preferential treatment to the US with its release schedule , some might have feared the similarly hot piece of tech Apple just announced today will also suffer from a tiered launch

Graph theory question — “nexus” node?

Looking for a graph theory term, if one exists.

I’ve got a graph where the nodes are connected by arrows, similar to a flow-chart, actually. The nodes are 1, 3, 4, 5 and are connected as follows:

1 –> 3
1 –> 4
1 –> 5
1 –> 6
3 –> 1
4 –> 1
5 –> 1
6 –> 1

In a sense, node 1 “goes to” each other node directly, and the other nodes only “go to” node 1. Or, said another way, node 1 is the only node that can communicate directly with all (any) other nodes — the other nodes have to go through 1 in order to get to somewhere else.

Node 1 seems to be sort of the “nexus” of the graph. . . is there a term for this property?

Thanks for any info!
