Samsung, it turns out, knows how to make a white Galaxy S
That rumored white Galaxy S for Europe is looking closer to reality now that Samsung has announced a "Snow White" version of the M110S -- the particular flavor of the burgeoning Galaxy S series that it sells in its own backyard of South Korea. Notably, this puppy lacks the white bezel we'd seen in the European rumor, but regardless, it's still a whole lot paler than any version we've seen launch thus far.

RIM finally catches up to the competition with non-GPS-based BlackBerry ‘Locate Service’
It's hardly the first company to implement the technology in a smartphone, but it looks like RIM finally has an answer for folks not satisfied with the GPS capabilities of their BlackBerry. It's now announced the simply-named 'Locate Service' for developers, which relies on cell tower triangulation to to either augment the phone's built-in GPS, or completely replace it when a GPS signal isn't available. According to RIM, the service also includes a set of components that "integrate seamlessly" with the BlackBerry Maps and Contacts applications and, of course, the GPS capabilities of the device

Innpu’s ‘wired phone’ has retractable headphones, intractable sense of self-worth
This is news to us, but apparently there have been "few noteworthy advancements" in smartphone hardware since the iPhone and BlackBerry came out. Out to fix this stale, plateaued industry is Innpu, with its revolutionarily new "wired phone" (it's bad news when even the manufacturer puts the product name in quotation marks, right?)

Nokia says all of its smartphones will support NFC starting next year
A few hiccups aside, Nokia has been one of the biggest boosters of near-field communication (or NFC ) for years now, and it looks like it's now made its biggest commitment to the technology yet -- Nokia's Anssi Vanjoki has announced that all new Nokia smartphones will include NFC starting in 2011. Of course, he did say "smartphones," not "phones," so Nokia does still has quite a bit more room to grow -- and, no, he didn't offer any more details on what those smartphones might be. Nokia says all of its smartphones will support NFC starting next year originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 18 Jun 2010 17:57:00 EST

Sony Ericsson scoops a new CTO
Seems like it was just last year that Sony Ericsson was replacing its CTO -- oh, that's because it was last year ! For reasons unknown, the company is repeating history already -- and this time looking outside its own workforce (but just barely) by heading over to parent Ericsson to nab Jan Uddenfeldt, who current holds the roles of senior vice president and senior technology advisor there. Uddenfeldt's based in San Jose, which means it'll be a short jaunt to his new office in Redwood Shores where he'll pick up the duties come July 1. We'd mentioned last year that we'd hoped that having an Americas-focused CTO at the company would mean wild new things for its US presence, but that dream hasn't really materialized yet; here's hoping
