How would you change the T-Mobile G2?

Outside of the Nexus One (and recently-launched Nexus S , of course), T-Mobile's G2 is about as close as one can get to stock build of Android. 'Course, it's now a point release behind Gingerbread, but we're hoping that'll be remedied in short order.

Dell Streak slips to $100 on contract at Best Buy

Discounts are raining down from the heavens these days as retailers try to offload old stock and do a bit of tidying up before rolling in the fresh batch of 2011 smartphones . Best Buy is keeping with this trend by treating its customers to a nice big saving on the AT&T-attached Dell Streak, offering it up for a mere $100 in upfront costs.

Best Buy sees big drop in TV sales, eases pain with beefy mobile revenue

Best Buy's stock took a 14.8 percent beating today on news that it earned $217 million in the third quarter -- a 4.4 percent decline year over year -- and felt compelled to revise its fourth quarter forecast downwards. The reason? Seems folks are holding off on buying televisions in a big way: the company suffered a "low-double digit' decline in boob tube sales, even worse than an industry average in the single digits, which would suggest that 2010's 3D revolution hasn't attracted the kind of consumer attention manufacturers (and content providers) would've liked

T-Mobile myTouch 4G rooted, has G2 root to thank for it

Even when they're relatively easy to root, it usually takes a few weeks of elbow grease to get an Android device fully opened -- but thanks to the hard work that's been put into the T-Mobile G2 root recently, its just-released sister device has been cracked already, too. Sure enough, if you're willing to put a little time into it, you can now break your myTouch 4G wide open, which presumably means it won't take long before we see some stock ROMs become available (if you're into that sort of thing)

myTouch 3G’s Froyo update well underway

From the looks of T-Mobile's official support forums, it hasn't gone out to everyone just yet -- but it looks like lots of myTouch 3G owners are now getting the official Froyo update the carrier announced back on the 13th of the month. Unfortunately, this doesn't include myTouches equipped with a 3.5mm jack -- those details are slated for "the coming weeks" -- but in the meantime, old-style device owners can expect a pretty stock-looking build of Android 2.2. Oh, and if you haven't gotten it yet, cool your jets (trust us, we know how hard that can be)..

T-Mobile G2 said to have ‘hardware rootkit’ that restricts modifications

Say it with us now: "Here we go again." Just months after a particular eFuse predicament left legions of Droid X owners fuming, it seems that an all-too-familiar scenario is presenting itself to the earliest of T-Mobile G2 buyers. As the story goes, there's a problematic microchip embedded into the handset which "prevents device owners from making permanent changes that allow custom modifications to the the Android operating system." That's according to a lengthy New America report on the issue, which outright proclaims that a hardware rootkit "restricts modifications to a device owned by the user." In other words, if you install some fishy (or not fishy, for that matter) third party ROM, the phone is capable of overriding your software changes and reinstalling the original firmware -- makes perfect sense considering how earlier roots were " vanishing " post-reboot. Needless to say, this isn't exactly going over well with the tinkering community, and a 40+ page thread has already exploded over at xda developers .

Hack improves Nokia N8′s image and video quality, puts a hurting on your memory card (video)

Clearly a lot of folks out there are pretty passionate about the quality of their cameraphone pics. So too is cellphone modder hyperX, who is developing some custom tweaks to improve the quality of the stills and vids coming out of Nokia 's latest darling. First is a hack to enable 720p30 video, a slight improvement over the 720p25 default

Nokia 5230 brutally overclocked to 800MHz

As overclocking hacks go, Nokia often takes a back seat to Windows Mobile and Android -- but why? In the year 2010, shouldn't we be showing these dusty 434MHz ARM11s some turbocharged mercy

HTC Wildfire gets ‘soft rooted,’ good enough to install root apps

It's not quite as awesome as a full root, but HTC's low-end Wildfire has now fallen to a halfway measure that's good enough to let you install apps that require root. For some users who aren't looking to obliterate their stock ROM, that should be good enough, since you'll still be able to do rooty things like move any app to microSD -- and needless to say, we're sure this is just a stepping stone to a full root anyhow.

HTC Droid Incredible finally returns to stock, not a moment too soon

If the rumors of an August 18th Android 2.2 update prove true, we'd say Verizon Wireless couldn't have picked a better time to get HTC's Droid Incredible back in stock.
