Sony takes aim at iPhone gaming in new PSP ad
Well, it looks like Nintendo isn't the only gaming company that thinks Apple is the " enemy of the future " -- Sony has now also taken aim at iPhone gaming in a new PSP ad featuring Kevin Butler 's pint-sized counterpart, Marcus Rivers. In it, Marcus reminds viewers that the iPhone is built for things like "texting your grandma and calling your girl," while the PSP is "built for big boy games," some of which can be had for as little as $9.99. See the whole thing for yourself after the break.
Exclusive: Sony Ericsson to introduce Android 3.0 gaming platform and PSP Go-like smartphone
There's no question that gaming on the Android platform has heretofore been relatively underwhelming, but that looks like it's all about to change. It seems that Sony Ericsson -- a company that has yet to even introduce an Android 2.0 device -- is at work on a project to redefine gaming on Google's mobile platform

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, Samsung Eternity II hitting AT&T in the coming weeks?
You might remember that we'd said back in April that AT&T would be picking up the Sony Ericsson X10 in the 30th week of the year. Well, turns out we weren't exactly right, but it seems we're going to end up being pretty damn close. We're hearing that AT&T is lining up for a launch some time between the middle of August and the middle of September; smartphone data is required, of course, and it'll cost independent dealers $345 per unit (retail pricing is anyone's guess).

Sony Ericsson X10 firmware update introduces wildly annoying WiFi bug
Apparently, the latest firmware update for Sony Ericsson's Xperia X10 (which, yes, is still based on Android 1.6 ) does more harm than good -- if you're frequently using WiFi and you find yourself in weak cellular coverage, anyhow. Basically, any time your cellular signal drops to zero then bounces back, WiFi turns itself off, which is particularly brutal considering that a weak signal is probably why you're leaning on WiFi in the first place. We don't have details on what X10s are affected, but R2BA026 sounds like the offending version -- so if you see it, we'd probably stay far away until SE manages to push another update

Pantech drops AMOLED completely due to shortage, may resume use in 2H 2011
The Pantech Vega that just hit Korea may boast a sizable 3.7-inch AMOLED screen, but don't expect future phones from the Helio manufacturer to follow suit -- after suffering the same shortages that drove HTC to Sony's SLCD-illuminated doorstep , Pantech's also temporarily giving active-matrix organic technology the boot. Now, you may not give two nickels about the technologies in Pantech's next handset, but the firm's got a finger on the industry's pulse. So when an unnamed executive says "phones to be rolled out in the first half of next year" won't use AMOLED, that hints at when the shortage for US-bound devices might also let up.

Opera Mini 5.1 promises to sip memory like a single malt scotch
Opera is taking the "Mini" in "Opera Mini" to heart with the lightweight mobile browser's latest release today -- version 5.1, which improves on the big 5.0 release from earlier this year. There aren't any notable new features, per se, but the company promises that 5.1 includes a new "optimized" skin that allows more pages to be open simultaneously and generally improves day-to-day performance

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 gets software update (and no, it’s not Eclair)
Sony Ericsson had previously committed to the fourth quarter for an update to Android 2.1 on its X10 , and as far as we know, that date's still holding firm -- in other words, the update that's now rolling out to units around the world is still the same old Donut you're used to.

HTC running low on AMOLED stock, will add SLCD to the mix for some models
AMOLED displays in phones haven't necessarily lived up to their promise; they'd been billed as the be-all, end-all answer for clarity, vibrance, and low power consumption, but in reality, the latest and greatest LCDs look just as good, offer similar viewing angles, have little to no impact on battery life, and fare far better in direct sunlight. We've been able to confirm this evening that HTC will be adding an additional supplier of displays later this year -- Sony -- which will be delivering its Super TFT LCD tech as a mobile exclusive (initially, at least) to key HTC handsets, some of which are already in the marketplace. Specifically, Samsung's had a devil of a time keeping up with deliveries of its 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED, which means that the Desire , Droid Incredible , and Nexus One could all theoretically be impacted -- but because this is a problem of the demand for displays outstripping supply (or at least the supply that Samsung is letting HTC buy), at least some of the affected phones will likely be offered both in AMOLED and SLCD varieties

Super AMOLED vs AMOLED vs LCD in direct sunlight… fight! (video)
By now you know that (one of) AMOLED's Achilles' heel is readability in direct sunlight . But Samsung's been working hard to fix that with its new Super AMOLED technology.
