Skype video call, the iPhone is the official, is now available (update: Hands-on)

All the signs indicate that it is a release for a few days, but I admit: we are waiting for Skype at CES next week, expect to pull the cover away from what may be the crown jewel of service in the coming months. IOS official Skype client has finally emerging ability to make video calls when the 3G iPhone, iPhone, 4, and the fourth-generation iPod Touch users to share real-time video between themselves and the users of Skype for Windows, Mac and Linux clients with Asus Video Phone (natural 3G users are not conveniently front facing camera, but they still send the video back-facing one). In addition, you can receive video from others when you use an iPad or a third-generation iPod touch. The service is free and works on both Wi-Fi and 3G – and taking account of the current footprint of Skype’s PC, we would argue that this represents a very real opportunity to make the hurt is to use face time. Not a word on when Skype will make a video-capable clients available for Android or other mobile platform, but Skype says that there are “many more” notices in Vegas next week, so we are not surprised. />
Update: So we just gave 3.0 a spin, with the iPhone-to-iPhone (both WiFi), iPhone-to-desktop (both Wi-Fi) , and while the iPhone-to-iPhone (both 3G). The first two worked well, although the desktop camera produces better quality. What is the worst case, the 3G-to-3G video calling, well … We do not recommend it unless absolutely necessary. Video after the break, and be sure to note the battery – about 10 minutes after use, we have dropped 66 percent to 61 />
[Thanks to everyone who sent this] />

Skype gets upgraded for Symbian, includes N8 support

You know what's awesome? Versions of Skype's mobile app that don't arbitrarily restrict you to WiFi networks. If you're in the US, you won't find such an app on Android devices -- but you will find it on Symbian, where the company has just released a re-upped build with new features and support for more phones.

Viber VoIP iPhone app: 3G calling, no registration, and totally free

You know those voice minutes you've been coaxed into buying for, like, ever? Now would be an awesome time to bid 'em adieu. Out of nowhere, Viber has swooped in to crush the dreams of Skype and every other VoIP provider out there, and if these guys can reach critical mass, avid iPhone users will certainly be able to buy a mobile plan with fewer minutes.

Verizon adds Skype to Pantech Crux, LG Octane, and Samsung Zeal

A proper Skype experience still remains pretty tough to get in the US, unless you have the good fortune of being on Verizon or you own an iPhone -- but Big Red's seen fit to expand its reach a little further today with the announcement that three more phone models are supported with the official Skype Mobile app. The new devices are the LG Octane , Pantech Crux , and Samsung Zeal , none of which are being announced today for the first time today... and none of which are even remotely close to smartphone territory, so it's nice to see that Verizon seems committed to keeping Skype available across the breadth of its lineup

LG Vortex puts a Verizon spin on budget Android — yes, Bing’s there, too

It's not exactly the Optimus T / S we saw hit T-Mobile and Sprint, respectively, but for all intents and purposes, it's a fraternal twin. The LG Vortex for Verizon brings with it Android 2.2, a 3.2-inch touchscreen, 3G Mobile HotSpot capability, Skype, Swype, a suite of pre-installed carrier / manufacturer apps (e.g. VZ Navigator), and as you might've guessed from it being a non-Droid Verizon Android phone, Bing Search and Bing Maps.

Skype app arrives in Android Market, WiFi-only in the US

Finally, at long last, after so much waiting , Skype has made its debut as a full-fledged Android app. There are no Verizon-related limitations anymore, but Android Police reports that calling through the app is only available via WiFi, you can't use your mobile's data connection -- not yet, anyway.

Fring reveals FringOut for cheap VoIP calls, challenges Skype head-on

When we first caught wind of Fring a while back, Skype compatibility was the draw, but as the years progressed and Fring grew some, the VoIP services didn't exactly get along . Today, the company's taking matters into its own hands with the not-so-subtly named FringOut, which appears to provide even cheaper calls to landlines and mobile phones than its powerful namesake. Starting on Nokia's S60 platform and "coming soon" to Android and iPhone, FringOut's promising as-low-as one-cent-a-minute calls.

RIM averts BlackBerry ban in India… for now

It was facing an August 31st deadline before India banned BlackBerry service in the country, but it looks like RIM has now managed to avoid that scenario -- at least for a little while. According to India's Ministry of Home Affairs, "RIM have made certain proposals for lawful access by law enforcement agencies and these would be operationalized immediately," and that "the feasibility of the solutions offered would be assessed thereafter." Details are still a bit light beyond that, but India's assessment will apparently come after 60 days, and there's still no guarantee that we won't end up back at square one at that point. Interestingly, India is also still raising complaints about Gmail and Skype, with it now saying that it wants Google and Skype to set up servers in the country that would give it greater monitoring capabilities

Lava Mobile’s B5 Alpha touts groundbreaking ABCDE keyboard

Okay, we're admittedly a wee bit stumped by what Lava's peddling here. The Lava B5 is a decent-looking, Bold -esque device with an ABCDE keyboard layout -- yeah, this kinda frightened our digits, too -- but as to what OS it runs or what network type it calls home is a complete mystery

Verizon quietly pushes Skype Mobile onto select non-smartphones

Back in February, Verizon Wireless made it quite clear what phones could be used with Skype Mobile, and the whole lot were smartphones . Sometime between then and now, however, it seems as if the carrier (or Skype... or both) has had a change of heart, as today a select few non -smartphones are showing up in its database as being compatible with Skype Mobile .
