PSA: don’t try to wow your friends with the key scratch test on the Nexus S — because it’s not Gorilla Glass

Before you stand (perhaps slightly inebriated) in front of a group of wide-eyed disbelievers and poke your brand new Nexus S' display with a fork, rock, key, icepick, or anything else that's hard and pointy, just remember this: it's not Gorilla Glass . That's the official word from Samsung Service's Twitter feed, a stark contrast to the hardened, tough-as-nails surface of the original Galaxy S' Super AMOLED display. No reason is given for the change, but there's an obvious theory: Corning might not have the technology to produce Gorilla Glass that's curved in the way that Samsung wanted -- or they can't produce it in the quantities asked of them -- and so Sammy decided to go with a slightly less rugged screen rather than ditching the so-called Contour Display

Samsung Galaxy 550 prepping for low-end Android duty on Virgin Mobile Canada

Americans on Virgin Mobile, you're going to want to keep on keepin' on with your Intercepts -- but our friends to the north are on the verge of getting an apparently exclusive new Android device out of Sammy, it seems. The so-called Galaxy 550 appears to be the same phone that we knew as the Galaxy 5 previously , featuring Android 2.1, a 2 megapixel camera, and integrated Swype atop some manner of smallish display. Needless to say, Virgin's billing this as a low-end smartphone in every sense of the word, saying it's "sweetly priced to fit all budgets" and pairing it with a new $40 plan that'll include 300 anytime minutes, 100MB of data, unlimited local incoming calls, unlimited nights and weekends, and your choice of unlimited messaging or Voicemail 10 / Call Display.

Samsung notches record profits, aims to sell ten million Galaxy S phones this year

My, how a year changes things. Q3 2009 was a nightmare for mega-corps in terms of earnings , but things have definitely been on the up and up just 12 months later.

Exclusive: Samsung Continuum for Verizon has double the displays, double the fun

The Fascinate's ride at the top of Sammy's Android lineup for Big Red might be a short one -- a very short one. Feast your eyes on this monster, said to be the rumored SCH-i400 Continuum, whose biggest claim to fame would be the addition of a secondary OLED display below the main. What might you use it for?

Samsung’s 4-inch Windows Phone 7 handset gets named: Cetus (SGH-i917)

You'd probably assume that Samsung would have a difficult time overshadowing the Galaxy S right now, but all it really takes is a salacious Bluetooth SIG entry that leaves only the most important parts to the imagination. We've known for some time now that Sammy would be one of Microsoft's closest Windows Phone 7 launch partners, and we've even taken the time to toy with a prototype earlier in the year. But a new Bluetooth certification is now all-but-confirming a name: Cetus.

Samsung Intercept ambushed in the wild, features higher res screen (video)

When we first got word of a Samsung Moment successor , we were concerned it would be too little, too late... but this week a man headed off Sammy's new Intercept at a Best Buy (for $100, reportedly), and there's slightly more to this device than it originally seemed. While the form factor and features are familiar enough -- a QWERTY slider with a 3.2 megapixel camera and 3.2-inch screen -- that display apparently sports a 800 x 480 resolution now, the keyboard seems much improved, ports and buttons have been thoroughly revamped, and the whole unit's been given a lovely sheen

Samsung AMOLED Beam SPH-W9600 projector phone is not what we’ve been waiting for

Remember Samsung's impressive 3.7-inch Super AMOLED Beam projector phone running Andriod? This isn't it. Instead, Samsung is launching its far less impressive 3.3-inch AMOLED (what, no Super ?) Beam SPH-W9600 we previewed back in January into its South Korean home.

Samsung Moment 2 with Sprint branding and TouchWiz 3.0 peeks out

The Samsung Moment is due to get Android 2.1 sometime in the near future , but it looks like it's also going to get a bit of a refresh -- check out this pic of a Sprint-branded Moment 2 that's said to have TouchWiz 3.0 on top of Android 2.1. Unfortunately, the same source says this thing doesn't have Sammy's new Super AMOLED screen , so we'd assume it doesn't have that new faster processor from the Galaxy S either -- all of which means the HTC EVO 4G is still really the Sprint device to wait for. But hey, maybe you love TouchWiz?

Samsung Galaxy S coming to AT&T?

We'd already heard from Samsung itself at CTIA that we'd see the high-end Galaxy S complete with blindingly brilliant Super AMOLED display on American soil in 2010 -- and considering that Sammy doesn't play the unlocked, unbranded game in these parts, that means with certainty that it'll be coming to a carrier. Here's where it gets interesting: the Bluetooth SIG has recently certified a "full touch" device (read: no keyboard) from Samsung identified as the SGH-i897 with a 4-inch display and TouchWiz 3.0 -- in other words, a dead ringer for the unbranded Galaxy S that's identified as the i9000. Historically, Samsung models that start with SGH and end with a number 7 land at AT&T (it's a tradition that goes back years) so it stands to reason that this i897 is destined for the orange and blue.
