T-Mobile’s $15 tethering option, tiered data available this Sunday

The $14.99 monthly unlimited tethering / mobile WiFi hotspot add-on for your phone that T-Mobile promised in time for the holidays will be getting real this weekend, hitting on Sunday, November 14th. Of course, owners of myTouch 4Gs, G2s with the latest firmware update, and a couple other models in the T-Mobile stable have already been enjoying the option, gratis, for a couple weeks -- so it'll be interesting to see how many subscribers they convert for the $15 upcharge. Certainly makes those roots seem a little more appealing, doesn't it?

T-Mobile G2 said to have ‘hardware rootkit’ that restricts modifications

Say it with us now: "Here we go again." Just months after a particular eFuse predicament left legions of Droid X owners fuming, it seems that an all-too-familiar scenario is presenting itself to the earliest of T-Mobile G2 buyers. As the story goes, there's a problematic microchip embedded into the handset which "prevents device owners from making permanent changes that allow custom modifications to the the Android operating system." That's according to a lengthy New America report on the issue, which outright proclaims that a hardware rootkit "restricts modifications to a device owned by the user." In other words, if you install some fishy (or not fishy, for that matter) third party ROM, the phone is capable of overriding your software changes and reinstalling the original firmware -- makes perfect sense considering how earlier roots were " vanishing " post-reboot. Needless to say, this isn't exactly going over well with the tinkering community, and a 40+ page thread has already exploded over at xda developers .

Stephen Elop chants ‘Developers, developers, developers’ to close Nokia World (video)

It was short and sweet but ex-Microsoftie Stephen Elop closed Nokia World by handing out a one million dollar developer award (well, "investment"). But hearing him chant "Developers, developers, developers" in a mild-mannered drawl worthy of Nokia's conservative roots was definitely the highlight. Droid 2 launching as soon as August 12, embraces Star Wars roots with R2-D2 edition

Ready to have your mind blown? Good, then sit down for a moment: we're hearing from a trusted source that the thoroughly-leaked Motorola Droid 2 for Verizon will be launching on August 12 -- although it seems to be something of a soft launch, because marketing efforts aren't scheduled to kick in until a week and a half later on the 23rd. What's even more interesting, though, is that there'll be a Star Wars edition of the phone launching with a white R2-D2 on the back

Opera Mini 5.1 finds its way to Android, too

Just a scant few days after the Java-based release for featurephones , the Android build of Opera Mini 5.1 (which, admittedly, also has its roots in Java) is ready for your browse-happy ways. As with the featurephone release, the focus here is almost exclusively on improving performance, an impressive goal considering that Opera Mini 5 was already burning rubber on many devices. Additionally, 5.1 is said to improve page layout on the latest round of high-resolution phones -- a good thing, considering many of us are now considering WVGA a bare minimum

China Telecom mulling huge EV-DO Rev. B rollout?

You might think that the EV-DO technology path has seen better days, what with carriers like Bell and Telus defecting for HSPA and others prepping to pull the plug altogether -- but really, it might take nothing more than one massive, eight-figure subscriber deployment of a next-gen EV-DO network to get things up and running again. Indeed, EV-DO Rev. B is still very much alive and well , and a rumored deployment by China's number three carrier China Telecom -- which counts over 70 million mobile users to its name -- could definitely light some fires

Nokia-Microsoft partnership bears first fruit: Communicator Mobile comes to E52 and E72

Last time we used "Nokia" and "Communicator" in the same sentence, we were talking about a giant QWERTY clamshell with roots dating back to the mid '90s -- but yeah, that's most definitely not what looking at here. Instead, we're seeing the first results of Nokia's newfound friendship with Microsoft , a build of Communicator Mobile that's all set up to run on the S60-based E52 and E72 . Granted, an enterprise instant messaging utility isn't something we can all use, but that's just as well since it's limited to just two devices in Nokia's range at the moment; eventually, it'll be preinstalled on "select" devices and be available to a broader selection of phones already in the lineup

You know what, we're not gonna make that joke . You can, but we'll just move right along to the meat of this story -- Nokia has listed a telescopic stylus for capacitive screens, the SU-36, which seems to have come out right alongside the N8 to serve as its Symbian^3 assistant.
