Palm Pre 2 lands on Rogers today, $99 on three-year contract

Beating out Verizon , Canada's Rogers becomes the first carrier in North America to pick up the Pre 2 today, hawking it for CAD $99 -- about $97 -- as long as you're willing to put your name down for a new three-year contract with a qualifying voice and data plan. Since Rogers runs HSPA on 850 and 1900MHz, you can bet this is pretty much the same phone Palm is offering unlocked in the States for $450; you're just paying a little less upfront and a whole lot more over time. Six of one, half-dozen of the other, as they say

Rogers, Fido offering iPhone unlocks for $50

Bringing this up with your local AT&T rep is liable to get you laughed out of the store, but things are a little different up in Canada where one of the major carriers is now offering an unlock service -- for a fee.

RIM gives lengthy PlayBook demo at Rogers conference, confirms 4G is on tap

We've already gotten a glimpse of some of RIM's PlayBook demo at the recent TabLife conference, but Rogers has now finally posted the complete video of what may well be the most comprehensive look at the device to date.

Canada’s Galaxy S Froyo updates start rolling out this month

Samsung's probably wishing it could just forget its claim that it'd have Froyo rolled out to all carriers last month , but at least it's providing a little bit of updated guidance to its Canadian users. Turns out Bell's Vibrant and Rogers' Captivate are on track for the middle of this month, while owners of Telus' Fascinate will need to wait a little longer: "early 2011," to be exact, which really isn't exact at all since it could easily mean anywhere between January and, say, April or so. Of course, Gingerbread will be all over the place by then -- and we might even be seeing our first glimpses of Honeycomb -- so be prepared for your version envy to continue unabated.

Rogers adds ‘data sharing’ plans, will carry both WiFi and cellular versions of BlackBerry PlayBook

With the precedent the Galaxy Tab has set, it was an open question whether carriers would embrace the WiFi version of RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook -- after all, it's a little harder to fully monetize a data plan on a device that lacks its own cellular modem. Thing is, the WiFi version is the first one that's going to be available; RIM hasn't given much guidance yet on when the cellular version will follow on -- and RIM doesn't have much of a distribution channel outside its carrier partners. Well, Rogers has thrown its hat in the ring today at its TabLife event in Toronto, where it has been chatting up the success of the tablets it's sold so far (the Tabs apparently won't stay on shelves) and noting that it will be carrying both versions of the PlayBook as they become available

Rogers, Telus already selling BlackBerry Bold 9780

Look, T-Mobile, don't feel bad -- Americans usually get scooped on new BlackBerry launches by their friendly neighbors to the north! RIM's a Canadian company, after all -- and as is frequently the case, the new Bold 9780 is seeing launches on both Rogers and Telus several days ahead of T-Mobile's retail go-live in the States.

Nokia N8 nearing release on Rogers, rumored to be $80 on three-year term, $449 off-contract (update: official!)

Rogers still hasn't officially confirmed that it will be carrying it, but all signs are pointing to the Nokia N8 launching on the carrier, and soon. According to MobileSyrup , the phones are now already arriving at Rogers stores across Canada, and it will apparently run just $80 on a three-year term or $449 off-contract (one and two-year plans are decidedly less attractive). Those numbers are further backed up by a leaked Rogers roadmap recently turned up by BGR , although it doesn't get any more specific than Q4 when it comes to a launch date

Rogers, Ericsson turn Ottawa into an LTE trial playground

Rogers is breaking LTE out of the confines of its labs for the first time with the announcement today that it's flipping the switch on a trial network in Ottawa -- a place where infrastructure partner Ericsson conveniently just happens to have some facilities. The 4G network won't be open to customers yet, but it seems like that'll be a relatively small step -- in the Ottawa area, anyway -- once all the technical issues have been ironed out.

Samsung SGH-i916 spotted cuddling up to an iPhone 4 in the wilds of Canada

Unless our eyes deceive us most cruelly, the Samsung phone we see above looks identical to the i917 Windows Phone 7 handset we've been seeing all over the place . Curious then that it bears the title of SGH-i91 6 . We can only surmise that there's some minuscule difference between the two phones, with this i916 seemingly set to ride Rogers airwaves up in Canada -- purportedly with none of Samsung's own branding anywhere on its shell
