Promise’s SmartStor Zero NAS streamer dumbs down DLNA for the iPad (hands-on)

CES 2011 might be over but we’ve still got a few gee-bees of data to get through before calling it quits. One nugget of unpublished glory is this SmartStor Zero NAS from Promise Technology. Now hold on… just because it’s a DLNA 1.5 compliant Network Attached Storage device doesn’t mean that it’s complicated to use. Hell, even iOS users can join the DLNA streaming and media transfer party even though Apple is one of only a few major manufacturers missing from the alliance. Promise has purposely dumbed down this particular 1TB or 2TB NAS to make it suitable for use in any home where a “zero configuration” storage and media streamer is the priority. That’s most households, come to think of it. Promise’s Billy Harrison gave us a walkthrough of the highlights including a live demonstration of the free (for a limited time) SmartStor Fusion Stream app running on an iPad (and soon Android and Windows Phone 7 devices). Compared to many DLNA streamers that we’ve seen this one was dead simple to use and even allowed us to upload / download music, video, and photographs to / from the SmartStor Zero. Of course, other devices that support native DLNA upload and DLNA download (like the Droid X) will work right out of the box. Fusion Stream also supports media multitasking right inside the app. But hey, don’t take our word for it, watch Bill lay down the truth after the break.

Relax, LG Ally owners: Froyo’s coming your way

Maybe it was the heat crosstown rival Samsung was bringing with its Froyo promises for the Galaxy S series , but whatever the case, we're pleased to see that LG has stepped up to commit an Android 2.2 upgrade for Verizon's Ally . Unfortunately, they're not offering up a date -- or even a multi-week window, a season, or a year -- so we can only hope this situation doesn't drag itself out into the hardware's irrelevance, as does occasionally happen with these sorts of things. We know, we know...

Samsung confirms Galaxy S will get Froyo in September

Wondering when the Galaxy S will be getting its own cup full of Froyo, the 2.2 build that every Google handset is screaming for? Samsung promised that an update would be coming not long after release , and now courtesy of the company's official UK Twitter feed we know it's due in September. At least, Samsung is saying it's coming in September.

webOS 1.4.5 is out, promises to make your wildest minor bugfix dreams come true

Palm's touting that webOS 1.4.5 is now out and about, though its support page for the version is a wacky hodgepodge of Sprint and SFR versions of the update -- perfect for French expats living in the good ol' US of A, we suppose. Odds are very good that this new build isn't going to blow you away, but hey, an update's an update: you'll get "minor fixes and enhancements" for use with the PDK , a text field fix for the browser, a "rare problem" involving podcast downloads, and that's about it. The optimist in us wants to believe that the utter lack of innovation in this latest update is a sign that most of Palm's brain trust is invested in engineering fresh hardware at the moment -- right, Palm?

Apple CDMA iPhone 4 rumor given new wings

With the iPad unicorn now slain, what other beast can DigiTimes shackle its rumor mongering machine to? How about Pegasus, the winged horse of Greek mythology (and inspiration for the ASUS company name), galloping forth with promises of a CDMA iPhone

Adobe brings AIR to Android, promises Flash 10.1 in the first half of the year

Convergence has always been a big theme in tech, and its focus at MWC this year seems to have landed firmly on procuring an application platform that is OS-agnostic. Earlier today, we heard of the big carrier cabal intent on slaying the beast that is multi-platform development through cooperation, but if you ask Adobe the answer is much simpler: just slap AIR on your phone.

Jabra Extreme promises to beat background noise to a bloody pulp

Holding a meaningful conversation in the middle of, say, a rock quarry or a steel factory isn't the simplest task in the world -- it requires a booming voice, a knack for picking out voices in the most distracting environments, and extreme patience on the part of your callee. Bluetooth headsets are particularly susceptible to call-killing background noise, giving rise to a number of technologies designed specifically to hush it; Motorola's CrystalTalk and bone-conducting HX1 are both good examples. Jabra rolled out its latest two-mic noise canceling algorithm -- Noise Blackout Extreme -- when it launched the Stone a few months back, and now it's taking that same tech over to the lower-cost (and aptly-named) Jabra Extreme
