Motorola’s mobile unit posts first operating profit in a long, long time
As a whole, Motorola is no stranger to profit... thing is, Moto won't be "whole" for much longer , and when the split happens, we're sure it'd like all of its divisions to be profitable. The mobile unit, of course, has been the struggling one, trying to pull out of a multi-year post- RAZR nosedive under the leadership of CEO Sanjay Jha -- and it looks like his all-in bet on Android is starting to pay off at the bank on today's news that they've posted a non-GAAP operating profit of $3 million.

AT&T clocks up 2.6 million net new wireless subscribers, bigger profits in Q3
AT&T's balance sheet just keeps looking happier and happier every quarter . In spite of the company's somewhat questionable hardware choices -- such as picking the ugly option from both Samsung 's and LG 's Windows Phone 7 platters -- it now proudly boasts a total of 92.8 million active wireless service lines

Motorola manages $162 million Q2 profit, turns that frown upside down
It's a good day here, because rather than poor 'ol Sad Moto we get to bust out Happy Moto, as Motorola has released some good news in its Q2 financial report. Earnings were $162 million, up from $26 million this time last year . That sounds like a big jump, but compared to overall sales of $5.4 billion you can see things are still rather tight -- especially since those sales were down from $5.5 billion the year before and all-important mobile device sales figures dropped six percent to $1.7 billion

AT&T announces 26 percent earnings growth for Q2, $4b profit
There may be plenty of tales of intrigue behind the scenes, but it looks like AT&T is still doing alright when it comes to raking in the cash -- it's now announced a 26 percent increase in earnings for the quarter that's just ended. In terms of hard numbers, that translates to a profit of $4.02 billion (up from $3.2 billion a year ago), and $30.8 billion in revenue, which is actually up just 0.6 percent over the previous year, although that modest gain is partly attributed to AT&T's sale of Sterling Commerce to IBM for $1.4 billion (which is not included in its results).

Nokia delays Symbian^3, investors not impressed
As in any business, in the world of the smartphone there are winners and there are losers. Earlier this week Apple blew away market expectations and posted a $3 billion profit thanks largely to increased popularity of the iPhone. For the competition news is not so good, and while Nokia did manage to boost earnings per share 40 percent this year, it missed analyst expectations and, more importantly, is having to delay the release of Symbian^3 until sometime in the third quarter

China Unicom profits down 50 percent, NTT DoCoMo up by the same margin
Call it proof that there's a global wireless karma equilibrium, if you will, that needs to be maintained: China Unicom has warned that its net profit for 2009 will be down a whopping 50 percent, while one of its doppelgangers across the Sea of Japan -- NTT DoCoMo -- has encountered exactly the opposite fortune on news that it has posted a 48 percent year-over-year improvement in black ink.

Ericsson to cut 1,500 more jobs than expected in wake of nightmarish Q4 ’09 earnings call
Just when you thought that infrastructure firms would be banking ridiculous quantities as carriers around the world kick off LTE trials and full-scale network upgrades, it looks like we're actually still stuck in a bearish period on Ericsson's news that its profit fell a whopping 92 percent to $43.4 million from the same period a year prior.

Research finds iPhone hurting operators, Boy George unavailable for comment
Filed under: Culture , Handsets , ATT , Apple We've long since known that Apple (as opposed to AT&T) was getting the better end of the pair's exclusive partnership here in America, but new research from Strand Consult has found that the situation is fairly similar all around the globe. According to the report, nary a one of the telecom operators it studied had seen a boost in market share, revenue or earnings as a result of introducing the iPhone, and some carriers even issued profit warnings due to the heavily subsidized handset. The study goes on to shed pity on firms like SingTel and TeliaSonera , both of which are purportedly seeing margins and ARPU (average revenues per subscriber) sink due to Apple's darling joining the fray.
