Sharp Mobiflip channels Sidekick LX’s vibes for Mobilicity
Thought the launch of the Kin ONEm and TWOm was strange? Here's another oddity with a Microsoft tie-in: Canadian startup Mobilicity has just announced the "Mobiflip," a phone that the carrier's own press release calls out as being "similar to the Sidekick LX ." It's unclear whether what's left of Danger will be supporting the device -- the Sidekick line basically pioneered mobile cloud computing, after all -- but what we see of the interface certainly rings true to the Sidekicks of days gone by

Chumby releases Android app, not quite as plush as the original
Chumby isn't just taking its platform to dedicated devices from other manufacturers, it's also moving to software -- a strategy that right out of Amazon's playbook now that Kindle is available on just about every computer and handheld under the sun. The company's new Android app simply connects to your Chumby account and lets you view and use the same Flash-based apps that you would on any other Chumby device, a testament to the fact that pretty much every Android handset hitting the market these days comes Flash-capable out of the box.

LG Optimus 2X: first dual-core smartphone launches with Android, 4-inch display, 1080p video recording
That's right, it's official. Needless to say, that LG Star we recently got our paws on is very real, though it won't go by that name at retail -- just as LG's own release materials had suggested , this monster has picked up the Optimus 2X name as it morphs from a prototype into brutally fast, overpowered reality. At the phone's heart beats a dual-core Tegra 2 processor running at 1GHz, the first such configuration to be officially announced by any smartphone manufacturer (though we're expecting others any day now).

Sanyo Taho for Sprint will take a beating, won’t deliver a beating to your wallet
If you were looking for Sprint's first fully submersible handset to sell for under $100 on contract... well, you've finally found it. What you're looking at here is the Sanyo Taho, a beefed-up clamshell that offers the usual suite of environmental resistance claims that come with mil-spec 810G compliance: water, dust, shock, and extreme temperature.

MetroPCS takes LTE live in San Francisco
Hey, it's not just Verizon making waves in the LTE arena today: MetroPCS -- which gets to lay claim to having the first commercial LTE network in the US -- has flipped the switch on its next-gen network in San Francisco, offering the same Samsung Craft handset that it's been selling in its other LTE markets so far for $299 (expensive for a dumbphone, absolutely, but you get it contract-free) with plans running $55 to $60 a month depending on whether you want access to the carrier's video-on-demand service. We're still holding out for a USB stick ourselves -- or at least an honest-to-goodness smartphone -- and now that Verizon's live, that might just force MetroPCS' hand.

T9 Trace ships as QuickType on Samsung’s Wave II
So Samsung's Bada 1.2-based Wave II is now shipping in a variety of European and Asian markets, and it turns out that so phone's so-called "QuickType" input method is actually T9 Trace , Nuance's Swype competitor that was announced earlier this year. Just like Swype, T9 Trace works by letting the user glide a finger around the virtual keyboard to identify what letters they're trying to type -- and if it works as well as Swype does, it's a surprisingly natural, accurate, and fast way to enter text. Samsung, of course, has been one of Swype's longest-running partners, notably having its Omnia II featured in a Verizon commercial where the Guinness record for fastest text is broken -- so it'll be interesting to see whether Sammy keeps a healthy mix of T9 Trace and Swype in its products, or if Nuance has locked up a more lucrative deal.
