Google’s big week: Nexus S, Honeycomb tablets, Chrome OS laptops, and eBooks to boot

We gotta hand it to Google : if its goal was to own the technology news cycle for 48 hours, mission accomplished. The Mountain View-based company spent the first two days this week laying out pretty much every big announcement it possibly could: a new flagship phone coming next week (the Nexus S ), a new Android build ( 2.3 Gingerbread ), a preview of the next Android build ( Honeycomb ) on a never-before-seen Motorola tablet , the debut of its cloud-based laptop platform ( Chrome OS ) with hardware, and a giant plunge into the growing e-book market -- and that isn't everything.

Nokia C7 pre-orders go live in some markets

By and large, Nokia's positioning the C7 as a lower-cost alternative to the N8 -- but with a relatively small pricing gap between the two in some regions, it seems like a lot of folks are going to want to just take the plunge and go for the 12 megapixel beast. In Finland, the C7 is now up for pre-order on Nokia's official web store for €439 ($582) unlocked, which isn't terribly much less than the N8 that can be had for €499 ($661). Well, with the delay, it actually can't be had just yet ; wouldn't be interesting if the just-announced C7 ended up shipping first?

Apple investigating issues with iOS 4 upgrade on iPhone 3G

Back when we outlined the iOS 4 features missing from iPhone 3G , we forgot one key bullet point: performance. As more and more two-year veterans of Apple's phones have taken the plunge and upgraded to the latest firmware, slowdown and battery drain issues have become a common complaint, which is even more irksome when you think of just how little the update really adds to the UI. The Wall Street Journal reports speaking to an Apple spokesperson who said the company is looking into the matter.

Would you look at that. Following in the footsteps of AT&T , O2 has today announced it'll allow current customers to pay off the remainder of their contracts at a discounted rate when they re-up with the network for the iPhone 4 . Verizon Mobile Hotspot on webOS devices now free, Pre Plus and Pixi Plus fall to $49.99 and $29.99

Whoa, we didn't see this one coming: Verizon just slashed the cost of its 3G Mobile Hotspot feature for the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus all the way down to $0, effectively giving you a broadband modem for your laptop, iPod touch, and up to three other devices for $60 less per month than you'd pay with a MiFi that accomplishes exactly the same function (and $50 less than any other tether-capable Verizon handset). For some, this alone could be reason enough to take the plunge and become a webOS user, we'd wager.

Nokia E72 imbued with a minor firmware bump

Having an E72 in your pocket already makes you a cool cat by Nokia standards, but you know what's even cooler? A firmware update for said E72, that's what. It appears that at least some product codes of Nokia's latest and greatest portrait QWERTY beast are getting hooked up with what appears to be a minor revision; we've yet to come across an official list of changes, though, so your guess is as good as ours.
