Symbian boss steps down effective immediately
Citing "personal reasons," the Symbian Foundation has just announced that executive director Lee Williams has left the company -- yes, "left," as in he's not going to stick around for a while to manage a transition. Williams has been steeped in Symbian for some time, having previously led Nokia's S60 business -- but the dude's been floating around the upper ranks of the entire mobile industry for ages, doing time with Motorola (through its Symbol acquisition) and Palm / PalmSource by way of Be. He's been replaced by the organization's reigning CFO, Tim Holbrow, and it appears that the appointment is permanent; what this means for Symbian's roadmap (if anything) is unclear, but we'd love to hear the backstory on what led to this power shift

Samsung Cetus i917 is in this video, automating your homes (video)
Believe it or not, we know most everything about the Samsung's Windows Phone 7-powered Cetus -- what it looks like , where it's going and what's inside , despite never seeing the device invoke a single pane of that Metro UI. Well, that's just changed with a new video from WMPowerUser , who tricked WP7 program manager Charlie Kindel into showing off his personal device -- albeit running a humble garage door opener app and thumbing through the dialer rather than showing a potent program of some sort. Still, that 4-inch AMOLED screen is very much in attendance, as you can see from the saturated orange squares above, and we'll just have to hope the last pieces of the Cetus puzzle -- release date and price -- come together in good time

Mercedes-Benz updates mbrace app with fancy pants ‘Concierge’ service
Mercedes-Benz just announced a new app that connects its in-car navigation systems with its customers' iPhones. Mbrace version 2.0 still lets drivers unlock their vehicles and, more importantly , find it in a crowded parking lot while adding location-based personal assistance ranging from entertainment, restaurant, directions, and traffic updates via Mercedes-Benz's Concierge service -- assuming you're are an mbrace PLUS customer. Destination information is then fired off directly to your in-vehicle navigation system to get you there.

iPhone’s App Store ‘Try Before You Buy’ section isn’t exactly what you’re hoping for
We love Android 's 24-hour app return policy, so when we heard about Apple opening a "Try Before You Buy" section in the App Store , we grabbed the closest iDevice in our proximity to see what exactly was up. Only, it isn't exactly what we expected given the name. Located under Features -> Free on the App Store, the new section serves only to highlight the free / "lite" edition of apps with premium older siblings

FLO TV losing money, Qualcomm looking for an out?
So it seems that founding and operating a broadcast mobile TV business is no mean feat: as mocoNews points out, there is spectrum to be purchased and transmission towers to be networked -- all before you can sell electronics manufacturers on carrying your chipset in their devices. Unfortunately for Qualcomm , it looks like FLO TV has been something less than profitable, a reality that CEO Paul Jacobs owned up to in the company's Q3 conference call.

FaceCash mobile payment apps are like real money, only with your face on it instead of someone smart
ThinkLink's FaceCash mobile payment system has debuted several apps (for BlackBerry, iPhone , and Android devices) which allow you to pay for things merely by scanning your phone -- and showing off the attached photo to confirm it is, in fact, your own money that you're spending. You sign up, link your FaceCash account to your personal checking and savings account, and you're good to go with participating merchants. The apps can also store credit card numbers and banking information (perfect for when you lose your phone during a night of heavy partying), making it easier to leave your wallet or purse behind..

SanDisk 32GB microSDHC vs. SanDisk 4GB microSDHC… fight!
We know which one we'd rather take -- but alas, we came packing the meager 4GB card in our personal phone as we sauntered up to SanDisk's booth at a CTIA press event this evening, not that juicy 32GB bad boy right above it. At the top there you can see the silicon that goes into each and every 32GB microSDHC to come out of the foundry, and it's pretty insane: 8 layers of 32nm 3-bit-per-cell memory. The SanDisk rep we spoke to said that other companies not capable of pulling off the 8 layer trick will be at a significant disadvantage, since they'll need to go with a higher density at the brutal cost of a lower yield rate -- and as we all know, a chunk of silicon that's failed QA is little more than a paperweight (and not a very effective one at that)
