Nokia software engineer says ‘hardware rules,’ software follows
Care for a little more insight into Nokia's smartphone development habits? In an email to our pal John Gruber, a former Nokia software engineer has laid out his perspective on why the Finnish phone maker seems to be struggling in that lucrative high-end smartphone market: "Here's the problem: Hardware Rules at Nokia. The software is written by the software groups inside of Nokia, and it is then given to the hardware group, which gets to decide what software goes on the device, and the environment in which it runs.

New ‘licensing service’ replacing existing copy protection method in Android Market
Copy protection has always been a concern in the Android Market , primarily because applications can be sideloaded onto phones without a root or other modification from the end user.

Tweaker ports Samsung’s TouchWIz UI onto non-rooted Nexus One for reasons unknown
This one's been kicking around the interwebs for a few weeks now, but it has managed to grow into something of a beast during that period. Frankly, we couldn't think of less fitting way to send the glorious Nexus One out than to completely deface it and ruin what Google has worked so hard to perfect. But regardless of what we think, that's exactly what has happened here

webOS 1.4.5 reportedly coming any day now… except for AT&T users
As friends very near and dear to us have confessed, " soon " is a relative term. If you'll recall, we heard from Palm (in)directly that the next webOS update was "coming soon" back in the early days of May, and here we are a fortnight from July without so much as an update regarding the update

Android 2.2 coming to Nexus One, open source community ‘in the coming weeks’
Why, thanks Google ! Just a day after wrapping up a rather monumental Google I/O event in Northern California, the company's official show Twitter account has belted out a tidbit that just about every attendee was wondering about. According to the outfit, Android 2.2 (yeah, that's Froyo for the inexperienced) will be "made available to OEMs and the open source community in the coming weeks," and it'll be hitting up the HTC-built Nexus One in the "next few weeks." That's music to our ears, and if you're unsure what kind of impact this will have on your own life, feel free to take a deep dive into this right here . [Thanks, Alex] Continue reading Android 2.2 coming to Nexus One, open source community 'in the coming weeks' Android 2.2 coming to Nexus One, open source community 'in the coming weeks' originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 21 May 2010 16:08:00 EST.

Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 gets ported onto Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X1
Not even a fortnight after we saw Android 2.0.1 slapped onto Sony Ericsson's all-but-forgotten Xperia X1 , along comes a port that makes the other look like child's play. A dedicated coder over at XDA Developers has managed to stuff Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 onto an X1, and while the functionality is limited (as you'd expect), the amount of fun to be had is restrained only by your imagination (and available vacation time)

Windows Phone 7 Series Marketplace gets pictured
Microsoft's Joe Belfiore did a really thorough job yesterday of walking us through the key hubs on the shiny new Windows Phone 7 OS , but one area that was conspicuously missed out in the overview was the Marketplace . Well, let us fill in that gap of knowledge right quick with the above image of the interface. As you can see, the first thing visible when you enter the hub is a full-screen feature for individual games or applications -- this could either work as with the music hub, wherein you see the last bit of content you accessed or, less awesomely, could function as a promotional (read: advertising) spot before you get into the market proper
