Motorola has an LTE phone for Verizon in the works
Verizon's chief operating officer John Stratton mentioned today that "LTE smartphones are on the horizon," a sentiment the carrier has been echoing since it launched its 4G network earlier this month . That alone isn't new, but what is new is the mention of Moto in the same breath: "Motorola will be right there." He wouldn't go into specifics about models, specs, release dates, or prices, but we wouldn't be surprised if the offering looked a little like the Tegra 2 -powered device codenamed Olympus (pictured) -- allegedly for AT&T -- that we've seen floating around recently

Editorial: RIM seems to be as lost as my BlackBerry
The only way to open this editorial is to admit something I've been rather shy about on the pages of Engadget: I've been an avid BlackBerry fan and user for about six years now. I mean a real addict -- the kind who wakes up each morning looking for a blinking red LED, the kind who's refused to give up push email and BlackBerry Messenger in favor of more powerful, polished, and progressive mobile operating systems like iOS, Android, and webOS

Nokia cutting another 800 jobs in Finland
On top of the 1,800 job cuts announced back in October, Nokia has announced this week that will be cutting another 800 positions right in Finland, the company's home turf. The good news is that the announcement was made only after negotiations with the affected employees were wrapped up, and they'll be getting anywhere between 5 and 15 months of severance pay -- and at least some of the staffers will be offered different positions elsewhere in the company. Nokia is in the midst of a fairly significant restructuring from top to bottom as it tries to claw its way back into the hearts and minds of consumers: it's got a new CEO , a new operating system , a new relationship with the Symbian Foundation , and some freshly trimmed fat, so let's hope Espoo's got a killer 2011 in the cards.

Samsung’s Bada 1.2 SDK goes gold
Just a little more than three months after the release of the final 1.0 SDK , Samsung has gone gold with version 1.2, proving that it can go tit-for-tat with Android in releasing new operating system versions at a ridiculous pace. Of course, in Bada's case, it's only Samsung developing devices -- so we imagine they have the situation under control. The big new feature in 1.2 would be support for the latest batch of Bada phones in the marketplace like the Wave 575 and Wave II , but you've also got improved Flash support and a full OpenGL ES implementation, both of which should bump up Bada's street cred in the gaming community

Microsoft: 15-app push notification limit isn’t that big of a deal, could be increased in the future
So Microsoft sounded off this week on the row over the 15-app push notification limit that just recently came to light, and while they've confirmed that the limit is very real, they've done a good job busting some of the FUD, explaining why it's not a huge deal, and how the limit might change in the future. First off, apps that support push but don't have it enabled don't count toward the limit, so that means that you won't necessarily end up with crashy software as long it's all coded correctly to handle errors raised by the operating system. Secondly, built-in live tiles -- Outlook, People, and so on -- don't count toward the limit, so if you include those, you could actually end up with over 20 total live tiles (sounds excessive to us, but we're sure someone's going to want to push the envelope)

Sprint: 4G tablet coming in 2011
We can't begin explain our exasperation at running a Samsung Galaxy Tab on Sprint's 3G , knowing full well the WiMAX airwaves floating just overhead could make our experience speedy. Thankfully, we won't have to dwell on our frustration for long, because a Sprint executive told Forbes that a 4G tablet will arrive in 2011.

Nexus S poses for Mr. Blurrycam, flaunting those signature curves
That fine bastion of cellular modding prowess known as XDA-developers received some particularly savory snaps this fine Thanksgiving morn -- spy shots of Samsung's elusive Nexus S running an operating system that looks uncannily like Gingerbread, which it calls " Android version 2.3 ," and sporting a new back cover that would look perfectly normal on the original Samsung Galaxy S , if not for the extra curves. XDA's source also claims it has a 720p video camera, though other specs are still a little shaky

Motorola slaps Microsoft with a pair of patent infringement lawsuits, says it’s such a shame
Looks like Motorola's about to fight a legal battle on two fronts -- Apple on one hand , and Microsoft on the other. Microsoft fired the first shot last month with a nine-patent ITC complaint and a second salvo alleging that Motorola was charging unfair licensing fees for 802.11 WiFi and H.264 video last week, it's now Moto's turn to retaliate with a pair of legal complaints. The cellular company now claims that Redmond's infringing a total of sixteen patents with everything from Microsoft Exchange to Bing Maps to the Windows operating system itself -- as well as the aforementioned video codecs and wireless tech, of course.

HTC 7 Mozart gets its microSD card swapped, but only after an intense teardown session
Man, Microsoft really isn't keen on having you swap out the microSD card that ships within its Windows Phone 7 devices, eh? After finding that the HD7's card could be replaced if you threw caution entirely to the wind, we're now seeing that the same is true with HTC's 7 Mozart . But unfortunately, you're still facing the same dilemma -- should you seriously risk destroying your phone forever just to get a capacity bump from 8GB to 32GB?
