PreFox is the webOS browser Mozilla won’t make (but they will make Firefox Home for Symbian)

Despite its fairly magnificent set of developer tools, webOS still gets the short end of the third-party app stick more often than not for the simple reason that there aren't many devices in the field, relatively speaking -- and considering how late Mozilla is in the mobile browser game, they've got bigger fish to fry. Of course, the code underpinning Firefox is open source, so it comes as little surprise that it's been repackaged into a Pre-friendly form with the aptly-named PreFox.

New Android 2.2 build leaks out for Nexus One, minor improvements noted

Well, well -- what have we here? Word on the street has it that we're looking at a new, unreleased (officially, anyway) Froyo build for Google's now-tough-to-locate Nexus One . The open source community has yet again uncovered what looks to be a real gem, with this fresh Android 2.2 version (FRG33) promising minor bug fixes, improved WiFi performance and speed improvements from top to bottom

LG enlists ‘Z Boy’ to promote Optimus Z, resembles an open source Zorro

Now that LG's new Optimus Z is available from both KT and SK Telecom in South Korea, it's obviously time to promote it -- and how better to promote a hot new smartphone launch than with a random mashup of the green Android dude and Zorro? Actually, this fella is actually "Z Boy," a tribute to the "Z" in "Optimus Z" -- but he's sporting the Zorro look as he wanders the streets of Seoul for the next month looking for victims potential buyers for the 5 megapixel, WVGA-equipped Android handset. With major entrants from Motorola, Samsung, and LG in the market, Android competition in South Korea is nearly as heated as it is across Europe and North America -- so yes, if you've got to win over a few customers with a big, lovable robot wearing a face mask, then by all means, LG, do your thing.

Android 2.2 coming to Nexus One, open source community ‘in the coming weeks’

Why, thanks Google ! Just a day after wrapping up a rather monumental Google I/O event in Northern California, the company's official show Twitter account has belted out a tidbit that just about every attendee was wondering about. According to the outfit, Android 2.2 (yeah, that's Froyo for the inexperienced) will be "made available to OEMs and the open source community in the coming weeks," and it'll be hitting up the HTC-built Nexus One in the "next few weeks." That's music to our ears, and if you're unsure what kind of impact this will have on your own life, feel free to take a deep dive into this right here . [Thanks, Alex] Continue reading Android 2.2 coming to Nexus One, open source community 'in the coming weeks' Android 2.2 coming to Nexus One, open source community 'in the coming weeks' originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 21 May 2010 16:08:00 EST.

Vodafone launches its first, underwhelming Android handset (video)

If we know you at all (and we think we know you pretty well) you'll probably be amused and titillated to learn that Vodafone has announced that its first Vodafone-branded Android phone will be available this May. The Vodafone 845 -- which we first saw in an FCC filing a couple weeks ago -- certainly is, in the UK idiom, a "budget blower." Featuring Android 2.1, a 2.8-inch (240 x 320) touchscreen, 3.2-megapixel camera, 128MB RAM, and 512MB storage, there is nothing too terribly wild here, but you know what? Sometimes a company just needs to hit a comfortable, middle-of-the-road benchmark.

Symbian Foundation talks about its move to open source

As we'd figured out last night , Symbian's big reveal for today was the completion of its move to a fully open, royalty-free platform -- meaning you no longer need to be a paid-in-full member of the Foundation to see all the code -- and they're ready to talk about it and spread the word far and wide. Though Symbian's certainly not getting as much share of the mobile discussion these days as some of its smaller competitors, it's certainly important to keep in mind that these guys have software deployed on literally hundreds of millions of devices, making this perhaps the largest-scale conversion of a closed operating system to open source in history

GSM call encryption code cracked, published for the whole world to see

Did you know that the vast majority of calls carried out on the 3.5 billion GSM connections in the world today are protected by a 21-year old 64-bit encryption algorithm? You should now, given that the A5/1 privacy algorithm, devised in 1988, has been deciphered by German computer engineer Karsten Nohl and published as a torrent for fellow code cracking enthusiasts and less benevolent forces to exploit. Worryingly, Karsten and his crew of merry men obtained the binary codes by simple brute force -- they fed enough random strings of numbers in to effectively guess the password.
