Sony Ericsson CEO suggests February reveal, perhaps the PlayStation Phone?
Plausible deniability seems to be Sony's strategy when it comes to the PlayStation Phone , and that apparently goes for Sony Ericsson as well -- once again, without actually confirming the existence of the Android-based gaming handset, its manufacturer is hinting strongly at an impending reveal. "There's a lot of smoke, and I tell you there must be a fire somewhere," CEO Bert Nordberg told the Wall Street Journal , adding that some sort of new Sony Ericsson product will be unveiled at Mobile World Congress this Februrary. While that particular item could easily be the 4.3-inch Anzu slate rather than a PlayStation slider phone, the chief executive didn't seem to shy away from video games in a series of additional quotes.

Ovi Store hits 3 million downloads a day
Nokia's chatting up the fact that it just broke the 3 million download per day milestone in its Ovi Store , backed up by 400,000 new developers in the last 12 months alone and a total of 92 developers who've crossed the 1 million total download mark. Interestingly, the download rate pales in comparison to Apple's App Store, which is raking in over 17 million downloads a day at last count -- despite the fact that Nokia still dominates market share and boasts Ovi Store compatibility with some 126 (yes, 126) models

Modu barely alive after failed bid for capital, laying off most of its employees
Modu hasn't really stormed the market with any of its miniature offerings just yet, and even with the just-announced Modu T and the upcoming Android-based Modu W offering a chance to turn things around, it looks like Modu is up against the financial ropes. Founder Dov Moran just announced that the company had failed to raise money in Tel Aviv, and he's going to have to lay off most of his workforce to stay alive. Modu currently employs around 30 people, and it's naturally going to have trouble building and selling phones with any fewer, but Dov says the company will "continue to sell its products" and he's going to be on the hunt for "other sources of capital." Modu barely alive after failed bid for capital, laying off most of its employees originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 18 Nov 2010 15:48:00 EST

Virgin Mobile Canada getting Samsung Galaxy 5, Bold 9780, and more this quarter?
If only Virgin Mobile were this cool in the States, right? The company shares little more than a name with its American doppelganger, but the fact remains that Sprint's subsidiary could probably learn a thing or two from its buddy to the north ( Samsung Intercept notably excepted). MobileSyrup says that the Android-powered Galaxy 5 (not to be confused with the much higher-end "S" line) with a 2.8-inch display will be hitting on November 12 for free on contract, while the still-unannounced Bold 9780 -- specifically identified as a "refresh" here, presumably to the 9700 -- is in the cards for CAD $149 ($147).

Prepaid Droid, BlackBerry and Palm phones coming to Verizon? (update: box spotting)
We'd heard a few rumors of some new prepaid offerings from Verizon recently, but it now looks like the carrier could really be about to expand things in a big way -- at least if some purportedly authentic leaked documents are any indication. Apparently received by Android Does from a helpful tipster, the documents list a whole new lineup of prepaid phones, including a slew of BlackBerrys, the Palm Pre and Pixi Plus, and just about every Android-based phone Verizon offers (including all of the Droids and even the yet-to-be released Samsung Fascinate -- again listed for September 9th ).

Samsung Vibrant launching today, awaits new owners in T-Mobile’s online store
A tiny bit of uncertainty has been cleared away thanks to good old Twitter, where T-Mobile has made July 15 (aka, today!) the official launch date for its Galaxy S derivative, the Vibrant . The original Tweet seems to have disappeared into the ether apart from that screenshot above, but T-Mo has reiterated the statement in subsequent missives, telling its followers that the Vibrant will be on sale today

Samsung Seek a dirt-cheap touchphone for Sprint?
Regardless of market segment, touch is all the rage these days, which means it's difficult for carriers to ignore it -- even in the cheapest corners of its product range. Word on the street is that Sprint will be shoring up its ultra-cheap touch offerings next month with the introduction of the Samsung Seek, a 2.6-inch QVGA piece with a meager 1.3 megapixel cam, microSD memory expansion, and not bloody much else. Color choices will be "Scarlet," "Cool Blue," and -- later on, if you want to hold out for the special edition -- "Fantasy Pink." This is all hearsay at this point, but the phone seems real enough with the FCC passage of a phone bearing the same model number a few months back, and we're hearing talk of a blockbuster $30 contract price -- not bad for a phone that almost looks mid- to high-end if you squint and forget the spec sheet for a moment.

Ovi Music Unlimited replacing Nokia Comes with Music branding
We can't say that we'll miss the awkwardly named Comes with Music service branding from Nokia. Of course, we're making the assumption that India's recently christened Ovi Music Unlimited store will be making its way global as Nokia continues to tighten up its service offerings in the race to compete in the era of modern smartphones. It's certainly consistent with the new Ovi Music naming convention so why not

Virgin Mobile Canada lights up HSPA+ network, iPhone 3GS, Bold 9700 in tow
Well, it's a bit earlier than the invitation to the big launch event suggested , but it looks like Virgin Mobile Canada is now officially part of the HSPA+ club, and it's now also selling a couple of new phones you might be interested in.
