RIM launches BlackBerry 6 platform

It's been teased since WES back in April -- but with the launch of the Torch today, RIM had to come clean with all the details on its thoroughly refreshed BlackBerry 6 operating system, too. Besides the obvious name change from "BlackBerry OS" to simply "BlackBerry," the software features countless updates, most notably new universal search functionality, social network aggregation, WiFi-powered media sync with your desktop music collection, and an all-new (and desperately needed) WebKit -based browser with support for HTML5. Thankfully, RIM has also committed to bringing BlackBerry 6 as an upgrade to at least a few recent models -- the Bold 9700 , Bold 9650 , and Pearl 3G , to be specific -- "subject to carrier certifications in the months ahead." Follow the break for the full press release and video teaser

BlackBerry Curve 9300 gets FCC approval?

Like many companies, RIM generally does a superb job of concealing model numbers of unannounced devices when it files for FCC certification -- but given what we know of Waterloo's product pipeline, we think it's safe to take a stab at what we're looking at here. In all likelihood, this is the upcoming Curve 9300 , evidenced by the general shape of the rear and... well, the obvious "Curve" label up top.

Motorola to launch two smartphones on Verizon in July, says WSJ

Motorola 's been making good with Verizon as of late, and according to the Wall Street Journal , the two just signed a deal to "ensure some of its upcoming smartphones will be heavily promoted" by the carrier." The article goes on to say that Motorola is planning to launch a pair of such devices on VZW this year, with the obvious platform choice being Android for both.

BlackBerry Bold 9800 slider coming next month as an AT&T exclusive?

We've still got thousands of unanswered questions (well, maybe not thousands, but definitely dozens) about RIM's upcoming BlackBerry 6 platform -- and it's starting to look like we might be answering those questions at retail by way of this Bold 9800 slider that's been making the rounds lately. BGR claims that the handset is lining up for a mid- to late-June release on AT&T, with the carrier having placed a substantial million-plus unit order to lock it up as an exclusive for some undetermined length of time (much as Verizon has managed to do both with the Storm and the Storm2 ). We hate to point out the obvious, but from a PR perspective, June's not the best month to be announcing and / or releasing anything that isn't an iPhone -- and when you look at the 9800's form factor and the baby steps that BlackBerry 6 seems to make toward boosting consumer appeal, we don't think you can make an argument that this is a sufficiently different market segment the same way you could with, say, the 9700 .

How would you change Nokia’s N900?

Maemo 5 didn't stand on its own for long before being mashed together with Intel's Moblin, but Nokia's N900 still stands as one of the best handhelds for web browsing. It's hardly the world-beater that Nokia (may have) hoped it to be, but that's not because the internals aren't impressive. We're guessing that only a handful of you made the effort to fork over wads of cash in order to pick an unlocked version up, but if you did, you no doubt have some opinions post-purchase.

Palm outs SDK for webOS 1.4

Lagging by the big OTA push by just a couple short days, Palm has published its SDK for devs looking to target webOS 1.4 -- and it's got some pretty important changes in the mix. Besides the obvious addition of Flash 10.1 on the Pre, 1.4 now incorporates WebKit 4 (along with an updated V8 JavaScript engine), better conformance with the HTML5 Media API spec, and additions to the platform's camera API to interact with the new video recording support. It sounds like a must-have download if you're looking to target Pres or Pixis any time soon, so have at it, won't you

Motorola Zeppelin spotted hopping train to Barcelona?

First, a disclaimer: we've heard the "Zeppelin" name before , both from Motorola and from Palm before that -- we have no idea why it keeps coming up, particularly given the obvious references to epic disasters.

Sugar-powered phone concept robs us of perfectly good Coke

This wouldn't be the first time we've seen a sugar fuel cell , but gosh darnit, it just might be the sexiest. Chinese designer Daizi Zheng has conjured up a vision for a soft drink-powered cylindrical Nokia of the future that pounds Coca-Colas to stay juiced: just screw off the top, pop the can, and pour. Daizi estimates that that a single can of the stuff could outlast a traditional lithium ion battery by three to four times -- never mind the obvious ecological benefits -- but don't you dare steal our caffeine the next time you need a charge, alright?
