We know this isn't exactly the news you wanted to hear, AT&T customers, but it's comforting to know that the diminutive Aria has been upgraded to Froyo somewhere , isn't it? HTC's support page for Southeast Asia now reports availability of an over-the-air update to build 2.37.708.5 for the phone, which brings it up to Android 2.2 -- topped off with Sense, of course -- presumably along with all the normal benefits of Froyo like tethering, improved enterprise support, and some serious performance boosts. It's unclear when this update will take a flight across the Pacific to AT&T's version -- but if nothing else, it's good to know that HTC's officially gotten the Aria working with something newer than Eclair.

A post from a Dell moderator says the company is working directly with Microsoft to draft a battle plan and that current Venue Pro owners (those that got their devices early on from Microsoft stores, that is) “might require another hardware swap” to get their issues solved. The rep says that she’s hearing that some orders could still potentially ship this week, but she doesn’t know which ones, and that affected customers are welcome to cancel their orders if they wish. So yeah, kind of a good news / bad news situation there. We’re still clinging to hope that we’ll see these things on the streets before the end of 2010, but it certainly seems like an iffy proposition at this point.

[Thanks, @steveymacjr]

Update: Dell’s posted a new blog entry on the matter, too, though it’s not much help — basically, you could get your phone before January 6th, but it’s anyone’s guess. They’re promising to keep people abreast of the situation as it develops.

It’s been a long, hard road for Intel in the mobile space, but it looks like things are about to get brighter: speaking at the Barclay’s Capital Global Technology Conference today, CEO Paul Otellini said that some 35 Moorestown tablets running a mix of Windows, Android, and MeeGo would arrive in 2011. (No wonder the company just formed a tablet and netbook division.) What’s more, he provided a handy chart showing the OS breakdown by vendor: Toshiba, Dell, Fujitsu are going Windows-only, while Asus and Lenovo are building both Windows and Android products, and Acer’s going straight MeeGo. (Remember, Acer’s using AMD in its Windows tablet.) That’s pretty much right on schedule, and we’d expect to see several of these at CES, but not all the news is so rosy: Otellini also said that Medfield-based smartphones won’t arrive until “mid-2011,” which is a bit of a delay from the “first half of 2011″ we’d been told in June. Sure, it doesn’t sound like the end of the world, but ARM-based competitors like Qualcomm, TI, and NVIDIA continue to push ever farther ahead with multicore designs, and Intel can’t very well catch up with delayed parts. Then again, if Intel can really deliver the performance and efficiency it’s been promising it might not matter — we’ll see what CES has in store.

Intel’s Otellini says 35 Atom-based tablets coming in 2011, but smartphones get pushed back (again) originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 08 Dec 2010 20:58:00 EST.
Seems Samsung still hasn’t solved the GPS woes on many of its Galaxy S models to the satisfaction of every user — complaints of inordinately long (or impossible) lock times continue to trickle into our inbox to this very day. To that end, folks might be interested in the news that Samsung Mobile is tweeting about a “GPS Restore Application” that it’s thrown together for wiping the GPS subsystem and making it factory-fresh. Now, we’ll be the first to admit — we don’t quite understand how “restoring” a screwed-up GPS to its original screwed-up state is doing any good, but we’ll leave it to Sammy’s confusing verbiage:

“During online surveillance, there is an abundance of GPS tweaks that impair GPS performance. Often times, no backup is performed to restore values prior to modifications. Samsung has released an application that restores GPS settings to recommended factory defaults for optinum [sic] performance.”

Right, then. It’s only compatible with the Captivate and Vibrant at the moment — no word on others like the Epic 4G, Mesmerize, or Fascinate, but folks on AT&T and T-Mobile should be able to nab it from the Market.

We're hoping he wasn't speaking out of turn here, but for what it's worth, Palm developer advocate Josh Marinacci has said on stage at webOS Developer Days today in New York that webOS 2.0 will be coming to "all" Palm devices in "the coming months." Now, we're going to go ahead and assume he's not talking about your Treo 650, your Palm III, or your LifeDrive, but we're taking that to mean that Pre, Pixi, Pre Plus, and Pixi Plus owners on all carriers around the globe can expect official upgrades for their phones -- and hey, considering how mild of an upgrade the Pre 2 is (and the fact you can't get it on some of the older devices' launch carriers), that's fantastic news.

Remember how we said yesterday a customer service rep told us T-Mobile was in the process of “sneaking away” its discounted, no-contract Even More Plus plans for full-price hardware? So yeah, the good news is that the plans apparently aren’t going away — but the bad news is that the carrier is trying to make them a little harder to get to. Clicking through to the individual plan listing only shows Even More listings now with no mention of Even More Plus whatsoever; instead, you’ll notice that there’s a teaser on the screen saying that you can “visit a T-Mobile store for no annual contract rate plans, and more.” We’re not sure if they’re doing this in an effort to simplify what the user sees online — that is, to make sure they’re not overcome with choices — or if they’d like to limit the number of users considering Even More Plus by making it hard to find and hard to buy, but either way, we’re not fans of the new system. We’re waiting on an official comment from T-Mobile — we’ll post it just as soon as we have it.

Update: Commenter omega1202 notes that he can still see Even More Plus plans when he logs into his account online, so not all hope is lost for existing customers.

The USITC has said early in the patent trial — in which Apple is the plaintiff — that “the evidence will not establish a violation” on Nokia’s part, elaborating that portions of some patents were invalid and others simply weren’t infringed at all. The judge in the case isn’t expected to lay down the law (quite literally) until next February — and he isn’t obligated to take the USITC’s side on the matter — but we’re sure the boys and girls over in Finland are high-fiving a bit on the news.

Sprint certainly isn’t out of the woods yet, but at least it’s picking up customers from somewhere. The company’s Q3 2010 earnings were ushered out today, and while its stock fell around ten percent on the news, a few silver linings were present. The carrier saw postpaid subscriber losses of 107,000, but that’s an 87 percent improvement compared to Q3 2009. The CDMA network added approximately 276,000 postpaid customers during the quarter, 471,000 (net) prepaid subscribers and 644,000 total wireless subscribers from a net perspective. It also landed its second best postpaid churn result ever, but the bottom line still looks battered — the operator announced a net loss of nearly a billion dollars ($911 million, if you’re scouting specifics). Of course, phasing out iDEN should probably help things in the long run, but even its 4G advantage could quickly fade if (or more likely, when) Verizon gets its LTE act together next year.
