History lesson, folks. If you dig far enough into iOS’s code, you’ll eventually come across iPhone3,1, which is the AT&T iPhone 4, and the analogous iPhone3,2 (i.e. Verizon iPhone). It’s nothing we haven’t seen before, but then along comes iOS 4.3 with a handful of new mystery identifiers to spurn speculation — namely, two new-generation iPhones (4,1 and 4,2) and three iPads (2,1; 2,2; and 2,3). Speculate all you want, but there isn’t much else at all we can say definitively here, but if we had to take a guess, it’s the GSM and CDMA variants of the next-gen models (plus a WiFi-only iPad). It is interesting to note the lack of an “iPhone4,3″ given the yet-to-be-revealed iPhone3,3 is still there — will the last member ever see the light of day? Outside of iOS 4.3 but still very much related, BGR is claiming it’s heard from sources that the next iPhone / iPad models will eschew the physical home button altogether in lieu of the new multi-finger gestures and that employees at Cupertino are already testing such devices. That seems a little more out there to us; five-finger pinch to home feels extremely clunky. The real takeaway here? We can finally have an iPhone rumor that doesn’t involve wondering if it’ll head to a new US carrier.

Notably, Sprint’s broadcasting will include the entire Bowl Championship Series — and in the off chance you’re interested in one of the five bowls that aren’t being televised on your phone, the Football Live app will still offer you play-by-play coverage and stats.
Those promised December Froyo updates for Canada's Galaxy S models? Yeah, they've started hitting -- or at least one of them has

Those promised December Froyo updates for Canada’s Galaxy S models? Yeah, they’ve started hitting — or at least one of them has. Owners of Bell’s Vibrant are the first to get hooked up, though you’ll need to use Sammy’s Kies desktop software to facilitate the setup — they’re not doing over-the-air updates for some reason we won’t even pretend to understand. Interestingly, the support page for the update process says that both Rogers’ Captivate and Telus’ Fascinate are having their updates tested as we speak and that they are “working on a release for later in December 2010,” which goes against an earlier statement that the Fascinate wouldn’t get 2.2 until “early 2011.” But hey, if they beat that estimate, who are we to complain?

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Is there any way to sensibly justify Mobiado’s colossally overpriced, underspec’d handsets? Not as far as we can tell — but Mobiado seems to be eminently aware of (and okay with) that, diving yet deeper into the bottomless pit of conspicuous consumption this week with the announcement of the 712 Mokume Gane candybar. What’s “Mokume Gane” mean, you ask? Well, turns out it refers to an ancient Japanese metalworking technique used to craft decorative weapons in which several types of metals are folded into one another to create a wood grain look. Oh, and if you’re wondering why they don’t just simply things a bit and use real wood, the short answer is that Mobiado already does that — see the 712EM model — so this would be for people looking for a little more heft (and presumably, cost). As with most of Mobiado’s models, this is a situation where you’re going to have to hit up a retailer to find out how close to bankruptcy the phone is going to push you.

The Dev-Team Blog was just updated with a new redsn0w version 0.9.6b4 jailbreak (based on Geohot’s Limera1n bootrom exploit) for iOS 4.2.1. Unfortunately, iOS device owners won’t find jailbreaking as easy as navigating to a website. And the 4.2.1 jailbreak is currently “tethered” so owners of the iPhone 4, iPad, and newer iPhone 3GS and iPod touch models will have to reattach to a PC or Mac to boot into a jailbroken state each time your device loses power or needs a reboot. Those of you who rely on the ultrasn0w unlock should hold off for now — good advice for anyone not comfortable with terms like “SHSH blobs” or “Cydia.” Everyone else can hit up the link below with a detailed how-to provided by Redmond Pie.

We’re guessing that this newfangled SmartPOP feature works a lot like Lenovo’s Constant Connect (or perhaps LG’s own Air Sync?), but either way, the feature set is still fairly innovative. Syncing your files and email is just the beginning — once you’re in, you can send an SMS, view contacts / files and dial a phone number from the comfort of your PC. We’re guessing that future uses will be somewhat more impressive than existing ones, but you’ve got to start somewhere, right? Word on the street has this one going for just under $700 in South Korea, and we’re definitely hoping that mobile there is included for that price.

Not much detail here, just some vagaries uttered by Michael Dell at an event in Hong Kong. According to Reuters, Mr. Dell said that it’s easier to develop smartphones using Microsoft’s Windows operating system than Google’s Android. Something that he, or at least his developers, should know something about having dabbled a bit on both platforms. Unfortunately, that’s all we’ve got — hopefully more details will be revealed later to give this some context. Switching gears, he also said that Dell would be launching a “significant number” of tablet PC models next year. Next year huh? What happened to Dell’s 7-inch Looking Glass tablet that was coming in “a few weeks” now more than one month ago?

Last we’d heard, the 7 Pro won’t be coming until 2011 (despite the fact that there’s already an FCC certification ready to roll), so if we were to see a few of the things floating around campus before January, we certainly wouldn’t be surprised. Pricing is yet to be announced.
