Android Market update streamlines content, nukes tabs, dismantles 24-hour return policy to appease devs

Updates have been coming fast and furious to Google's Android Market for a couple weeks now, but this is the biggest shift yet -- that rusty tab-based interface is out, replaced with a rotating carousel of downloadable content, and a single scrolling pane of info for each and every app. What's more, it seems that Mountain View has heard the cries of game companies in particular, as it's got a couple of very special changes largely targeted at them -- the size cap on individual apps has been upped to 50MB, and Android Market's famous 24-hour return policy is no more.

Verizon’s LTE details go live: December 5th, 38 markets, 60 airports, and 2 USB modems

Verizon has a press conference lined up in a few minutes to officially drop all these details, but they've thrown their official LTE site live already where you can see almost everything you want to know: chiefly, that the initial 38 markets (and 60 airports) will go live this Sunday, December 5th with two USB modems in tow -- one from LG and another from Pantech. We've already heard all of that in one form or another, but it's nice to see it spelled out officially on Verizon's site. The one crucial detail we're still missing, of course, is plan pricing -- so we anxiously await that here in the next few minutes, but in the meantime, feel free to play with Big Red's LTE coverage locator.

BlackBerry PlayBook Simulator Beta hands-on

Sure, you might have to be at Adobe's MAX conference to actually hold a PlayBook in your hand... but RIM's offering us all the next best thing by turning a beta version of its PlayBook simulator loose on devs way, way in advance of the tablet's release -- ostensibly in the hopes of drumming up a beefy third-party app catalog in time for retail

Dryer Box hits Japan, promises to dry out soaked cellphones for $12

Chances are you've probably heard of the rice method for drying out water-logged gadgets -- and possibly been in the unfortunate position of having to try it -- but it looks like folks in Japan now have a considerably more high-tech option at their disposal: the Dryer Box. That's reportedly already found its way into some Yodobashi Camera shops in Tokyo, and promises to dry out your soaked cellphone (or other gadget, presumably) in about 30 minutes for

Sony teases something smarter, our money’s on Xperia

Sony's website is slowly ticking down the hours, minutes and seconds until the company's latest product launch, but like all other Sony teasers in recent memory, there's little real doubt. If references to "X10" peppered through the site's source code left any doubt, this picture should clear it up -- mark our words, that's an Xperia X10 underneath the clock. Apparently the four-inch Android smartphone is finally ready for its US debut, though whether it's "smarter" or no will probably depend on which version of the OS it ships with

Android Market is down, showing zero apps (update: fixed)

Look, we know that checking the Android Market for updates its a nervous habit during brief periods of downtime for many of us -- but for now, you're going to have to go back to chewing your nails or tapping your fingers on the table, because the Market's down. Well, that's only partially true -- you can still get into the Market app on your phone without any errors, you just won't see any apps in there, which renders it pretty useless by our estimation.

iPhone OS 4.0 beta 3 is ready for your scrutiny (update: it’s been pulled)

The last time Apple dropped a release of iPhone OS 4.0 , it left more than a few downloaders in crumpled heaps on the floor, sobbing quietly to themselves as they tried desperately to come to terms with the fact that their beloved iPhones were far less usable than they had been just a few minutes prior. Well, we don't know yet if beta 3 is any better, but it's here -- and if you're a member of Apple's iPhone dev program, it's ready for you to install. So yeah -- take care, good luck, godspeed, be prepared for the worst, and hope for the best.

Skyfire 2.0 beta for Android video preview!

We just spent a few minutes playing with the beta version of Skyfire 2.0 for Android that was released today, and we'll cut to the chase: this is easily the best browser we've used on the platform. Clearly we'll need to spend more time with it to make sure it can handle all the typical sites you'd want to visit while you're on the road -- but loading the desktop version of Engadget is always a great barometer for this sort of thing, and this browser rocked it. Rendering is about as reasonably fast as you can expect it to be (on our Snapdragon -powered Nexus One , anyhow), and everything we saw displayed spot-on perfect (save for embedded Flash, of course), but if you're in a situation where you don't need to see the full page or it looks screwy, you can toggle it to send an Android user agent right from the app's toolbar below the URL field
