Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, Samsung Eternity II hitting AT&T in the coming weeks?

You might remember that we'd said back in April that AT&T would be picking up the Sony Ericsson X10 in the 30th week of the year. Well, turns out we weren't exactly right, but it seems we're going to end up being pretty damn close. We're hearing that AT&T is lining up for a launch some time between the middle of August and the middle of September; smartphone data is required, of course, and it'll cost independent dealers $345 per unit (retail pricing is anyone's guess).

LG Wink series custom crafted for ‘Generation Z,’ Gen Y need not apply

Generation Z, as far as we can tell, roughly refers to kiddies born between 1991 and 2009 -- which means that if you're the ripe old age of 20, LG's not really looking to target you with its new full-touch Wink line, specifically identified as a Gen Z special in the press release. Of course, considering the specs, you probably won't be shedding many tears; the entry-level Wink (pictured left) has just a 2.4-inch display, the Wink Style isn't much more generous at 2.8, and the "high end" Wink 3G (pictured right) seems to be the only one of the bunch with high-speed data. All three have 3.5mm headphone jacks, integrated FM radios, and microSD expansion, but if you're an American Gen Z'er, don't get too excited -- it's only slated for Europe and the Middle East this month followed by Latin America, the CIS, and "select Asian countries" later in the third quarter

Puma Phone now available somewhere you probably don’t live

We never thought we'd live to see the day where we were talking on a shoe, Get Smart -style. Technology still hasn't advanced nearly enough to make authentic shoe-talking anything more than a distant dream, but the next best thing -- a phone from a shoe manufacturer -- is now available. Actually, "available" is a bit of a stretch since the Puma Phone has only launched in nine European, African, and Middle Eastern countries so far, but we'd hope that a wider launch is on the way.

Verizon looking to partner up for rural LTE deployments

If you're wondering why T-Mobile doesn't have 3G in the middle of the Mojave, the answer's pretty simple: it's hard for any of the Big Four to justify spending millions of dollars on infrastructure in sparsely-populated areas. Rather than ignore it and leave the spectrum blank, though, Verizon's asking other companies to step in and share the responsibilities -- sort of -- by letting partners do most of the hard work (build towers and operate backhaul) while Big Red chips in its 700MHz spectrum holdings and "core LTE equipment." Presumably, Verizon will help itself to a share of the proceeds, which from their perspective, makes it look like a win-win scenario: they're helping to bring 4G technology to underserved areas, doing less work and spending less capital than they'd have to otherwise, and profiting off the spirit of an initiative that FCC chief Julius Genachowski is pushing very, very hard at the moment. And hey, we bet you'll be getting some insane throughput when you're rocking the LTE modem in the middle of nowhere

Kyocera Zio M6000 joins burgeoning Android ranks with high-res affordability

You know your mobile OS is going places when people start resurrecting their smartphone divisions just to throw out their own spin on it. Kyocera 's approach with the new Zio M6000 has been to marry an 800 x 480 display to some rather middle of the road components and to sell that package at a significantly lower price point (between $169 and $216 unsubsidized ) than most Android-infused communicators on the market

Vertu taste on a Nokia budget: meet the N97 Mini Gold Edition

Phone manufacturers usually leave the gilding to jewelers and other specialty shops that are more willing to show complete disregard for taste and common sense than themselves, but once in a while, pure, unadulterated emotion gets the better of someone in a position to make product decisions -- yes, even at Nokia -- and something like this slips through the cracks. Meet the N97 Mini Gold Edition, which is pretty self-explanatory: it's an N97 Mini with 18-carat gold on the important bits

China says Android can stay, misses Google’s point

A Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology spokesperson has today delivered a statement affirming China's willingness to allow Android devices to operate within the country without restriction so long as they adhere to the nation's laws. This means that whatever China's response to Google no longer obeying its censorship edicts may be, it won't be to disallow Android -- which kind of makes sense considering the growing roster of OPhones out there, all running a remixed version of the dessert-loving mobile OS. Then again, Google's latest power play was to hold back Android handsets from entering China, so we're not entirely sure how much the Mountain View outfit cares about the Middle Kingdom's apparent benevolence.
