Microsoft to open mobile games studio, develop and incubate Windows Phone 7 titles

Microsoft employees may eat their own dog food , but they won't have to code cross-platform Windows Phone 7 games in their spare time -- Redmond job postings recently revealed that there's a studio for that, which will develop and publish first- and second-party titles on the company's dime.

First batch of Windows Phone 7 applications may include Yelp and YouTube

Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 was missing a critical feature -- web video -- when we previewed it late last month, but it appears the platform may have at least a YouTube solution before all is said and done. A former Microsoft program manager with access to the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace tweeted the above picture earlier this week, which shows that there are at least placeholders for a variety of games and productivity tools as well as Yelp and YouTube -- the latter of which is listed as a "Music Hub Add-On." We tried to access the catalog ourselves from our test units and didn't see any new apps or updates, but it's possible this particular branch is restricted to Microsoft partner developers for the time being; we'd hate to think Microsoft was actively blocking our Keyboard Cat fix.

Here's something that seems to have slipped the net from Kevin Turner's recent presentation on Windows Phone 7 devices. AT&T claims it will be ‘the premier carrier’ for Windows Phone 7

Without question, AT&T 's wireless growth these past few years has been largely based on iPhone -- and with apparently good reason, if you look at the numbers . As far as other platforms go, however, it's not been as rosy. Android 's relation with the carrier, for example, is a story woven with years of hesitation , some questionable releases , and a rival that's fully embraced it to notable success (releases like the Captivate and Streak suggest a stronger future)

Microsoft becomes official ARM licensee, could an MS microprocessor be next?

ARM processors are so hot right now, especially in the mobile space, where they power many of the greatest smartphones, tablets, and mobile devices coming down the turnpike. Microsoft is apparently looking to merge in on that action, becoming an official ARM licensee

Microsoft wants employees to code Windows Phone 7 apps ‘in their spare time’

You had to know those freebie WP7 devices for Microsoft employees would come with a few strings attached. We imagined the Redmond brain trust was aiming for some word-of-mouth popularization along with a boost in team morale and proactivity, but as it turns out, things are a little more codified than that

Kin listed as at least $240 million writeoff in Microsoft earnings report

Here's a tidbit in today's Microsoft quarterly earnings that we previously overlooked: a $240 million cost of revenue "primarily... resulting from the discontinuation of the Kin phone, offset in part by decreased Xbox 360 console costs." In other words, the company took at least a quarter billion hit due to manufacturing, distribution, and support costs of the Kin (according to Microsoft's definition of "cost of revenue"). We don't know how much Xbox 360 offset, unfortunately, but we can add this figure to the $500 million Danger acquisition and the full marketing cost for the product (which we also don't know, but anecdotally, it was on par with other major campaigns) to reach..

Microsoft Kin gets a software update, still can’t re-tweet

We're going to go out on a limb and guess that most folks haven't been losing sleep over the prospect of a Kin software update (or lack thereof), but those that have been constantly watching their One or Two for a bit of good news can now rest a little easier -- sort of. While the Kin has received a software update, it's not the previously talked about one that would add revolutionary features like Twitter replies and re-tweets.
