TomTom’s Map Share update brings crowdsourced navigation to iPhone GPS app

Buckled early and sprung for TomTom's iPhone GPS app , did you? NavFree launches free US iPhone navigation app with offline map data

There's no shortage of iPhone navigation apps out there, but we can't say we've seen too many that come with 1.6GB of offline map data -- especially for free. That's the hook for NavFree USA, which just went live in the App Store -- sure, it also has some interesting social features like crowdsourced map updates and navigating to friends, and you can buy add-ons like traffic and speed camera info, but we think most people will use the free turn-by-turn and call it a day. That is, until Apple builds navigation directly into the OS .

Navigon’s MobileNavigator 1.7 update adds universal iPad integration, Retina Display support, and more

We've maintained for quite some time that Navigon's MobileNavigator app was leaps and bounds better than most of the similarly priced alternatives, and if you just so happen to already own it, you can look forward to a rather sizable update this morning.

Google Latitude makes brief appearance in App Store, gets yanked post-haste

Ah, the games that grown-ups play. It's a situation that's beginning to feel an awful lot like the Google Voice fiasco that made the rounds in mid-2009, but if it ends in a similar fashion , you won't find us kvetching about the teases

Apple’s Find My iPhone / iPad service now free, doesn’t require MobileMe

We'd been sort of hoping Apple would just make MobileMe a completely free service, but it looks like we're taking baby steps instead: Find My iPhone / iPad is now free for iPhone 4, the iPad, and the fourth-gen iPod touch running iOS 4.2.1 .

ComScore: European cell phone navigation on the rise

In Europe, it was a good year for cell phone GPS -- ComScore , an organization that tracks painful sounding concepts like penetration and market share, just reported that an estimated 21 million Europeans stopped to ask their phone for directions last year. That's up 68 percent from the 12.5 million who did so in 2008. With two-thirds of mobile map users saying they accessed their phone GPS in a moving vehicle, ComScore thinks the stats suggest phones might replace standard PNDs as well
