Verizon’s Fivespot gets FCC approval by way of ZTE

This actually happened a few days ago, but since we admittedly weren't on the lookout for hot filings from Chinese manufacturer ZTE, we totally missed it until we circled back for our FCC Fridays roundup this week. That's right: what you're looking at above is a non-carrier-branded version of the Fivespot global mobile hotspot for Verizon that we'd broke the news on last month -- and if you sift through the user's manual in the FCC filing, you'll see that this is indeed the same thing as the Verizon device. As a refresher, this puppy is supposed to replace the aging MiFi and offer support for triband HSPA alongside EV-DO in the event you're dying for some 3G coverage outside the States.

Innpu’s ‘wired phone’ has retractable headphones, intractable sense of self-worth

This is news to us, but apparently there have been "few noteworthy advancements" in smartphone hardware since the iPhone and BlackBerry came out. Out to fix this stale, plateaued industry is Innpu, with its revolutionarily new "wired phone" (it's bad news when even the manufacturer puts the product name in quotation marks, right?)

Supposed next-gen iPhone cases surface in China

We're not sure if it's a result of some hard information or simply an educated guess, but it looks like the first next-gen iPhone cases (or would-be cases) are now starting to find their way before a camera.

Apple #1 US phone manufacturer, RIM enters top 5 worldwide, Motorola feels the burn

Apple, love it or lump it, has seen some big numbers lately: one million App Store apps downloaded, ten billion iTunes, and now it looks like the company can claim to be the number one phone maker in the US. According to Forbes , Apple sold 8.8 million iPhones in the first quarter, as opposed to 8.5 million mobile devices sold by Motorola -- quite a slide when you figure that four years ago the company moved something like 46.1 million in Q1.

Sony in bed with the enemy?

I will mention no names other than Sony, but I know all of you have seen the latest round of computer software commercials in which some idiot boasts about "That was my idea!" for a new computer operating system.  In the one I just watched, the kid on the couch was typing away on a Sony Viao.  The Viao emblem was PROMINENTLY displayed in one of Sony's console competitor's commercials.  ?  So, what should we take from this?  Granted, Sony computers need software to run, but that software manufacturer does not need Sony onboard to be successful.  Hmmmm...... Sony could go exclusive Apple or Linux, but they do not.  That other company could NEVER feature Sony computers in their commercials, but they do not choose to do so
