N900 can run unmodified webOS games, what can your Linux-based phone do?
Ah, standards. Palm and Nokia know what we're talking about, which is why they support similar methods of developing native Linux apps, namely SDL 1.2. Add on the hardware similarities between the Palm Pre and the N900 (OMAP3430, PowerVR SGX, Open GL ES 2.0 support) and you have a beautiful recipe for cross-platform gaming.

Nokia N900 firmware PR 1.3 goes live
The addition of support for the full Ovi Suite and "performance improvements" are the only two items listed in the Nokia N900's latest published firmware update, but there's a third item skulking around that Nokia seems less willing to talk about: "easy" (albeit experimental) MeeGo dual-boot support, as promised in a recent posting on MeeGo's official site. We suppose the capability isn't mentioned because Nokia has said on no uncertain terms that the use of MeeGo on the N900 is an unsupported configuration -- but seeing how the N900 has been a hacker's delight from day one, we fully expect hundreds of thousands of the machines to be happily booting up the new platform within a day or three of this firmware breaking loose

MeeGo 1.0 for netbooks and N900 now available to download
You've seen it teased , and now it's time to shelve whatever you had planned for this evening (or morning, depending on your current coordinates) and slap the first bona fide 1.x MeeGo release onto whatever device you've got handy.

Nokia updates N900 to version 1.2 in UK, closes door on MeeGo
You've overclocked it and hacked it to run OS X and Android , now you can return your N900 to its native Maemo 5 OS with the launch of a version 1.2 software update. The V10.2010.19-1 bump now available in the UK (global on Wednesday) packs several enhancements including face-to-face video calling, improved Ovi Maps, and a better email experience with bundled Facebook IM Chat and the ability to accept or decline event invitations from the inbox. You'll also see a number of new games when the Ovi Store switches over on Thursday

Intel gives MeeGo 1.0 its first public performance (video)
Here we go open source fans, the first debut of MeeGo 1.0 running on Intel silicon -- an Acer Aspire One netbook (the 532h , from the looks of it) with a Pinetrail processor to be precise -- sporting a simplified UI that looks to have inherited far more Moblin DNA than Maemo.

MeeGo Gone Wild! Features detailed, companies come on board at IDF 2010
Wow, the MeeGo news is flying fast and furious today! Our first stop is the Intel Developer Forum , where a recent talk detailed feature lists for netbooks and handhelds running (presumably) 1.0. For the former, you can expect to see it rockin' Chrome (or Chromium), and overhauled social messaging, media, camera, email, and calendar apps. That's in addition to touch and gesture support.

Nokia N900 Maemo / MeeGo dual boot ‘will come at some point,’ but not next firmware
Quim Gil of Nokia's Maemo team has dropped some knowledge on the folks chatting up the upcoming MeeGo release in the official Maemo forums, and it sounds like there are at least a couple critical points to be aware of for N900 owners and would-be ROM flashers when the first developer preview drops next week.

Sygic Mobile Maps for Nokia N900 brings turn-by-turn to Maemo
Nokia may still not have brought turn-by-turn navigation to Maemo with its own Ovi Maps , but N900 users can now get their fix courtesy of Sygic, which has just released a version of its Mobile Maps app for the device. Available only in Europe to start with, the app costs €60, and includes maps of both eastern and western Europe, along with the usual "millions" of points-of-interest, speed camera locations and speed limit warnings, and plenty of customization options (including support for multiple languages). No firm word on availability outside of Europe just yet, but Sygic does say that additional regions will be announced "gradually." Head on past the break for a quick demo video

MeeGo repository going public later this month, coming to Nokia N900
Valtteri Halla -- Nokia employee and one-half of MeeGo's Technical Steering Group -- has blogged up a storm this week about the first baby steps that'll get the platform off the ground from its Moblin and Maemo roots, and from the sounds of things, we'll be able to get our first glimpse at it on production hardware before the month's out. Currently, the plan is to open up MeeGo's code repository to all comers "by the end of this month," targeting both Atom boards and the N900 .

LG GW990 to be among first MeeGo phones
Intel and Nokia certainly surprised a few of us yesterday when they decided to merge Moblin and Maemo into the new, more terribly-named MeeGo OS , but it looks like LG is ready to roll with it -- the Moorestown-powered LG GW990 we saw at CES will be one of the first MeeGo phones when it launches later this year. Of course, that doesn't mean much of anything beyond branding, since the GW990 uses a custom UI on top of the x86-based Moblin core and we doubt there's any of Maemo's ARM-based code involved there, but it's a definite sign of things to come
