It's on, suckers. Motorola just sent us this "Tablet Evolution" teaser video for their CES 2011 announcements, and it doesn't mince any words -- it calls the iPad a "giant iPhone" and says the Samsung Galaxy Tab is running Android "for a phone" before closing out with a buzzing bee over that new red Motorola logo . You know, the tablet that’s since leaked out with a Verizon logo on it.
Been wondering about what impact Motorola’s January split into two distinct entities will have on your humble consumption of consumer electronics? Well, after attending Moto’s big Christmas do in London, we seem to have uncovered one of the biggies: the Droid maker is switching to a crimson new brand identity from the start of the new year. They won’t tell us much more than that, but we can only surmise that the slight chromatic deviation will be in an effort to distinguish between the Mobility arm, which will make all the pocketable things we know and love, and the Solutions group in charge of the less glamorous business hardware. We’re sure there’ll be some reshuffling of middle management and other structural reorganizations taking place, but we’ve got the big story right here: the stationery, it is a-changing.

A tipster is shopping this device around the tech blog circuit this morning claiming it’s the first of two “iPhone killer” Olympus Tegra 2 smartphones from Motorola. At first glance, it looks like a Motorola Defy. Closer inspection, however, reveals a slightly elongated speaker above the Motorola logo, different volume controls down the right-hand side, and possibly a front-facing camera top-left. We’ve already seen the words “Motorola” and “Olympus” cohabiting in the official UPnP Forum with bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and dual-band 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi confirmed by the Bluetooth SIG and WiFi Alliance. What this is, we can only guess. See a second snap after the break.

We thought the Samsung Focus was the only Windows Phone 7 launch device that could replace its external storage, but the HTC HD7 can apparently do the same — there’s an SD card slot under that Windows Phone logo, and The Unwired managed to replace it while dodging the dreaded “There’s a storage error” screen. What sort of black magic did the publication cast to make it recognize the new card? They’re not quite sure themselves, but several factory resets and physical reinsertion of the chip seemed to do the trick, if only for an 8GB card. If you’re in a daring mood, let us know if it works for you in comments below!

From the front it looks like any other iPhone 4, but flip it around and a glint might catch your eye — that’s the doing of Russian technology tailor Gresso, who’s embedded Swarovski crystals and an 18-karat golden Apple logo in a sheet of African Blackwood attached to the device. As usual, one wonders why anyone would bother, but honestly we can’t complain — the design is worlds more tasteful than the solid gold and diamond-encrusted contraptions we’re used to seeing. Expect the dainty dillantante to arrive in December at a surprisingly reasonable $3,500, or $3,000 for the male-targeted version at right. Of course, if you’ve got that kind of money to spend, you want one now, right? Good news: the iPhone 3GS gets the same luxurious treatment — and price — in July.

[Thanks, Bob]

Look familiar? Yep, this is precisely what we expected HTC’s rumored Legend to look like based on the renders we’d seen so far. We don’t have any information here other than the pictures themselves, but from what we can gather, it seems to carry over Sense as we know it today without a trace of that freshened look we’ve caught in recent months (not unlike its Incredible cousin). Maybe more importantly, the Legend looks like it might be kicking off a new styling direction for the company with a big, bold, chromed company logo around back and an aluminum shell that we suspect feels awesome in the hand — particularly if it’s pre-production aluminum. More on this one as we get it; in the meantime, check out a shot of the back after the break.

[Thanks, anonymous tipster]

The latest research from Gartner indicates that, for the year 2009, only 16 million app sales were executed on mobile devices not bearing the infamous bitten apple logo. In reporting this data, Ars Technica inadvertently conflates Apple’s latest announcement of three billion apps downloaded with the notion of three billion apps sold and pegs the App Store’s market share at a whopping 99.4 percent — but more realistic calculations still show it to be somewhere in the vicinity of 97.5 percent. Going off estimates (obtained by GigaOM) that a quarter of App Store downloads are paid-for apps, and taking a rough figure of 2.5 billion downloads in 2009, leaves us with around 625 million app sales performed by Apple, which comfortably dwarfs all its competition. Considering the fact 18 months ago there wasn’t even an App Store to speak of — whereas today Cupertino is gobbling up the best part of $4.2 billion in annual mobile apps revenue — maybe you can now understand why we’re covering every tiny drip of info about that mythical tablet.
