TomTom’s Map Share update brings crowdsourced navigation to iPhone GPS app

Buckled early and sprung for TomTom's iPhone GPS app , did you? If so, that very app just got a lot better today, as version 1.6 has brought TomTom's Map Share -- a crowdsourcing aspect that'll keep your maps more up-to-date than you ever thought possible. Map Share enables iPhone users to make changes instantly to their own maps and to benefit from free map updates made by the TomTom community and verified by the company itself.

Google Latitude makes brief appearance in App Store, gets yanked post-haste

Ah, the games that grown-ups play. It's a situation that's beginning to feel an awful lot like the Google Voice fiasco that made the rounds in mid-2009, but if it ends in a similar fashion , you won't find us kvetching about the teases

Google lets you search Androi… er, make that iPhone apps from your iPhone

We'll admit, we didn't see this one coming: pull up Google on your iPhone's browser, and you'll now discover there's an "iPhone Apps" option that lets you search the App Store . Looks pretty much like any other type of Google search, but results contain apps' star ratings and the first few lines of their descriptions; tapping on a link boots you right into the App Store itself.

CineXPlayer adds iPhone and iPod touch to its Xvid party list, still won’t cook your popcorn

Remember how NXP Software surprised the world with its CineXPlayer iPad app just two months ago? Well, the gang is back to give our iPhone (3GS and 4) and iPod touch (3rd and 4th gen) the same dose of Xvid goodness.

PlayOn finally gets its iPhone app approved, HTML5 lets out a sigh of resignation

We're loving this new, slightly more liberal wave of App Store approvals (aren't we easily pleased?), and it looks like PlayOn drew the lucky number today. After waiting in vain for an app approval, PlayOn actually developed a fairly sufficient HTML5 solution to its streaming-web-video-to-your-device problem, but there's nothing quite like the sheen and polish of a bonafide app

eBoy’s FixPix iPhone game is basically the greatest thing ever made

Okay, so this isn't out yet, but it's hard to deny that the eBoy -designed Delicious Toys-developed game FixPix is probably the best idea anyone has ever had since the wheel or sliced bread. Maybe that's a little hyperbolic, but as you know, we are huge fans of eBoy and their mind-boggling pixel art.

Sling says it didn’t change iPhone SlingPlayer for AT&T

AT&T certainly made a few of us happy yesterday when it announced that the iPhone SlingPlayer app would now be allowed to run over its 3G network , but the carrier apparently embellished the facts a little when it said Sling had optimized the app to be "more bandwidth sensitive" -- Sling's John Santoro told Ars Technica that it "didn't change anything," and that "AT&T never discussed specific requirements with us." So much for that happy narrative -- we thought AT&T's line sounded odd, given that SlingPlayer has always run just fine on AT&T Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, and S60 devices. It's cool, though, Sling isn't sweating it: "Whatever the reason, we're just glad AT&T has approved it." Now it's just up to Apple to let it through the App Store -- any day now, guys. Sling says it didn't change iPhone SlingPlayer for AT&T originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 05 Feb 2010 11:11:00 EST.

Tiki’Labs virtual keyboard for iPhone takes shot at Swype, one-handed typing wars commence

One-handed touchscreen typing is the hip new thing, apparently, since mere weeks after getting our first whiff of Swype , Tiki'Labs has debuted its own free TikiNotes app for the iPhone with a proprietary "large target" sort of keyboard. We've seen the idea before, specifically with some accessibility devices, which lets the user drill down into one of six alphabet sectors, and then pick one of six characters. TikiNotes improves upon that by not only predicting the word you're currently typing, but also often correctly guessing the next word you were planning on typing.

Chevy Volt to get iPhone, BlackBerry apps

They may not let you actually drive the car James Bond-style, but it looks like there will be some apps for the iPhone and BlackBerry launching alongside the Chevy Volt , with apps for other devices apparently also a possibility. That word comes from Chevrolet's soon-to-be-retiring VP Brent Dewar, who unfortunately had little to say about the apps themselves, but did briefly flash the above slide during a presentation at the LA Auto Show last week. The apps will apparently let you control when the car charges, however, and even include integrated real-time features from OnStar, which should include things like electricity rates from utility companies by the time the Volt rolls out.
