History lesson, folks. If you dig far enough into iOS’s code, you’ll eventually come across iPhone3,1, which is the AT&T iPhone 4, and the analogous iPhone3,2 (i.e. Verizon iPhone). It’s nothing we haven’t seen before, but then along comes iOS 4.3 with a handful of new mystery identifiers to spurn speculation — namely, two new-generation iPhones (4,1 and 4,2) and three iPads (2,1; 2,2; and 2,3). Speculate all you want, but there isn’t much else at all we can say definitively here, but if we had to take a guess, it’s the GSM and CDMA variants of the next-gen models (plus a WiFi-only iPad). It is interesting to note the lack of an “iPhone4,3″ given the yet-to-be-revealed iPhone3,3 is still there — will the last member ever see the light of day? Outside of iOS 4.3 but still very much related, BGR is claiming it’s heard from sources that the next iPhone / iPad models will eschew the physical home button altogether in lieu of the new multi-finger gestures and that employees at Cupertino are already testing such devices. That seems a little more out there to us; five-finger pinch to home feels extremely clunky. The real takeaway here? We can finally have an iPhone rumor that doesn’t involve wondering if it’ll head to a new US carrier.

Last year Hughes Telematics had the Mercedes mbrace iPhone app on display, providing some OnStar-like functionality like locking your car remotely, unlocking your car remotely, and even getting navigation to your car for those times when you park way out in the lot and can’t find it again when you’re suffering from post-shopping marathon mental lethargy. All the signs indicate that it is a release for a few days, but I admit: we are waiting for Skype at CES next week, expect to pull the cover away from what may be the crown jewel of service in the coming months. IOS official Skype client has finally emerging ability to make video calls when the 3G iPhone, iPhone, 4, and the fourth-generation iPod Touch users to share real-time video between themselves and the users of Skype for Windows, Mac and Linux clients with Asus Video Phone (natural 3G users are not conveniently front facing camera, but they still send the video back-facing one). In addition, you can receive video from others when you use an iPad or a third-generation iPod touch. The service is free and works on both Wi-Fi and 3G – and taking account of the current footprint of Skype’s PC, we would argue that this represents a very real opportunity to make the hurt is to use face time. Not a word on when Skype will make a video-capable clients available for Android or other mobile platform, but Skype says that there are “many more” notices in Vegas next week, so we are not surprised. />
Update: So we just gave 3.0 a spin, with the iPhone-to-iPhone (both WiFi), iPhone-to-desktop (both Wi-Fi) , and while the iPhone-to-iPhone (both 3G). The first two worked well, although the desktop camera produces better quality. What is the worst case, the 3G-to-3G video calling, well … We do not recommend it unless absolutely necessary. One of the lesser known predictions of the Mayan calendar foretells that 2011 will be the year of NFC. The contactless communications stuff looks to be building all kinds of stream in the Western world, but don’t lose faith in your current smartphone if it doesn’t already have it. Japanese carrier Softbank has responded to complaints about the iPhone 4′s NFC deficit — the FeliCa payment system is pretty popular over in the land of sumo, sushi and sun-rising — by introducing a new “seal” for the back of Apple’s latest and greatest. It sticks on, covering almost the entire rear, but is apparently thin enough not to get in the way of using one of Apple’s own Bumpers alongside it. From our reading of the press release, the sticker doesn’t actually communicate with the iPhone, it’s just a dumb NFC card, but hey, other people don’t need to know that when you’re swiping payments with your phone, now do they? On sale in February at a price of ¥2,980 ($ 36).

I have some ideas for android and possibly iphone apps, but I have a pc and only know some javascript. Does anyone know of some software that I can get that would make creating apps easier? I have already signed up for Google’s App Inventor and I am waiting for an invite. I have also installed appcelorator, but it isn’t that easy to use.
