Nokia’s Savander: ‘the Symbian Foundation will exist as an open source movement and we will use it’

The veracity of The Register 's information regarding the Symbian Foundation's future remains to be seen -- but for what it's worth, Nokia's outspoken vice president of markets, Niklas Savander, seems to have some pretty strong language about the platform's future in a recent interview with CNET Asia . Here's the money quote in response to a question about whether Espoo will pull the Foundation's operations back in-house after having spun them off as an open-source operation in 2008: "I don't see any reason for that

Mongoose Studio’s dozen iPod cluster display is an expensive way to watch Tron (video)

Most of us would be happy to get video to play on a single video to play on our PMP without having to run it through some sort of transcoder first, but the folks at Mongoose Studio needed something more complex.

HTC files patent complaint against Apple, asks for ban on iPhone, iPad, and iPod

We'd been wondering how and when HTC would respond to Apple's patent lawsuit , and here we go: the Taiwanese phone manufacturer just filed a complaint with the International Trade Commission, asking for importation and sales of the iPhone, iPad, and iPod be halted due to alleged infringement of five patents. ITC complaints like this are pretty familiar territory -- you'll recall that Nokia and Apple have both asked for similar bans in their lawsuit against each other -- but the interesting wrinkle here is that HTC apparently hasn't filed a corresponding federal lawsuit. We'll see if that's the next step for HTC down the line -- for now, we're digging into what patents are involved in the ITC complaint, so stay tuned

Survey says: most teens don’t have a data plan, almost all send texts

Microsoft and Verizon might think all the kids want to do with their new Kin phones is pay absurd data rates for a half-baked Twitter experience , but it turns out Generation Upload is still actually just Generation Text Message. That's at least the word according to a Pew Internet Research survey published on April 20th and neatly summed up by a new Flowlogic infographic published today -- only 23 percent of American teenagers with cellphones use social networks with their phones, while 72 percent of all teens use text messaging.

Sprint Airave gets remixed by Airvana, has VoIP landline and EV-DO support

The Samsung-sourced femtocell that Sprint and Verizon have been offering (as the Airave and Wireless Network Extender , respectively) is all well and good, but it's got one fatal flaw: unlike AT&T's aptly-named 3G MicroCell , they don't have support for 3G data -- they're compatible with 1x only. Verizon's fixing that later this year with an updated model from Samsung , but thanks to a fresh FCC filing, it looks like Sprint will be taking a different route by roping in Airvana for the Airave's successor.

Wall Street Journal: Windows Mobile 7 coming next week

We pretty much knew that Windows Mobile 7 is coming next week at MWC, but the Wall Street Journal has a piece up confirming the announcement, along with a few other interesting details. As we'd heard , the new UI is a riff on the Zune HD interface, and the OS "reflects a much tighter focus" on hardware / software integration, all based around a "small number" of hardware chassis specs -- pretty much what we've known, but it's interesting that the Journal 's source says the plan is to "limit the wild variation" that's typically been the hallmark of Windows Mobile.

LG Lotus Elite hops from a Las Vegas billboard right to Sprint retail

Egads! The LG Lotus Elite is here, and while it's gained a few features, it still shares it's predecessor's awful interesting design aesthetic. The Lotus Elite distinguishes itself from the Lotus with the addition of a larger 2.4-inch external 262k display, a bold new tattoo pattern, support for up to 32GB of memory -- with 2GB included -- and access to Sprint TV, messaging, pictures, and even TeleNav. The LG Lotus Elite wanders into stores on the 12th in red for $99 on a new contract and a black version should follow four days after
