iOS 4.2 supports new tech to reduce network congestion, Nokia Siemens says

One of the world's top suppliers of cellular infrastructure, Nokia Siemens , has dropped some juicy knowledge today that Apple's new iOS 4.2 update supports a technology called network-controlled fast dormancy that better optimizes how the phone connects to the network. The company touts that it's a win-win -- better battery life, less unnecessary network utilization -- and also points out that Nokia implemented the technique in all of its smartphones starting earlier this year

Cellular South hooks up with Samsung for LTE network, two LTE-enabled phones next year

Regional carriers -- which historically haven't had the highest-tech networks around -- have been surprisingly quick to support LTE (heck, MetroPCS remains the only US carrier with a live network ), and now it's little Cellular South jumping on the bandwagon. Samsung sent out a press release a few days ago touting a new partnership to help Cellular South in its grand endeavor, supplying both infrastructure equipment and two LTE-compatible phones for a launch in 2011 with expanded availability in 2012 in the carrier's 700MHz spectrum.

Ericsson estimates mobile lines have hit 5 billion, gives shout out to China and India for the help

Ericsson -- one of the world's top-tier infrastructure suppliers for mobile networks -- has crunched some numbers recently, figuring the five billionth cellphone line came into existence last Wednesday, July 8, largely from major surges in uptake in emerging markets like China and India. Mobile broadband access (which we take to mean access to 3G speeds and beyond) still trails significantly at just 360 million in 2009, though they're predicting a cool 3.4 billion users by 2015

MetroPCS bringing LTE to Las Vegas this year, Samsung doing infrastructure and first LTE handset: the SCH-r900

Look out folks, we're about to go LTE, and it's not from where you were expecting: MetroPCS is building out an LTE network in "various metropolitan markets," with Las Vegas due to go online first in the second half of 2010. Samsung will be doing the infrastructure work, and is running the presser here at CTIA, with a pretty impressive display of room-based LTE show of force. Samsung, as previously announced, will also be building the first 4G handset for the network, dubbed the SCH-r900, though they aren't sharing any other details about the device at this point

Motorola targets first quarter of 2011 for split into two

Ending a healthy spat of rumor and speculation , Motorola has confirmed today that it'll be splitting into two separate entities as of the first quarter of next year. The first of the two will form from the current Mobile Devices and Home businesses -- led by Sanjay Jha effective immediately -- with control of the phone business, set-top boxes, and "end-to-end video, voice and data solutions," while the other half will congeal out of the Enterprise Mobility and Networks divisions that are responsible for wireless infrastructure, two-way radios, public safety systems, and the like, and that will be led by Greg Brown (in other words, both businesses will retain their current leaders). The deal apparently has the support of Moto's board (a good thing to have when you're a publicly-traded company), and logically, both spin-offs will be publicly-traded as well.

Government warns of wireless network congestion again, rides iPad to push its spectrum agenda

The feds simply aren't backing down from their incessant warnings of a wireless broadband spectrum crunch the likes of which the world has never seen, and they've seemingly found a great vehicle -- the iPad -- to help spread the message just a little further (and at a higher volume) than before. This time around, it's the Omnibus Broadband Initiative's director of scenario planning Phil Bellaria who's sounding the alarm, saying that the iPad foretells "even greater demand for mobile broadband on the horizon" and asking that the people with the money and the power (the carriers and the FCC, respectively) do what it takes to make sure that the nation's broadband infrastructure and policy are appropriately managed in light of that. Perhaps most provocative is his statement that "reaching an always-on wireless broadband future means that the spectrum can no longer remain attached solely to uses deemed valuable decades ago," possibly a veiled reference to the FCC's ongoing spat with TV broadcasters over the future of over-the-air broadcasts

Major infrastucture supplier calls it: LTE over WiMAX

If you're Clearwire or Sprint right now, the last thing you want to hear is one of the world's major suppliers of wireless infrastructure badmouthing the very technology that underpins your next-gen network -- so we imagine there's some groaning in the hallways and boardrooms of the world's WiMAX carriers today. Why?

Nokia Siemens, LG hit LTE speed record

What, 43Mbps not good enough for you? Well, clean room testing doesn't really say much about what kinds of data speeds we'll be seeing in the real world -- but for what it's worth, LG and infrastructure joint venture Nokia Siemens have announced that they've hit a new speed record for an LTE Class 3 device: 100Mbps.
