Promise’s SmartStor Zero NAS streamer dumbs down DLNA for the iPad (hands-on)

CES 2011 might be over but we’ve still got a few gee-bees of data to get through before calling it quits. One nugget of unpublished glory is this SmartStor Zero NAS from Promise Technology. Now hold on… just because it’s a DLNA 1.5 compliant Network Attached Storage device doesn’t mean that it’s complicated to use. Hell, even iOS users can join the DLNA streaming and media transfer party even though Apple is one of only a few major manufacturers missing from the alliance. Promise has purposely dumbed down this particular 1TB or 2TB NAS to make it suitable for use in any home where a “zero configuration” storage and media streamer is the priority. That’s most households, come to think of it. Promise’s Billy Harrison gave us a walkthrough of the highlights including a live demonstration of the free (for a limited time) SmartStor Fusion Stream app running on an iPad (and soon Android and Windows Phone 7 devices). Compared to many DLNA streamers that we’ve seen this one was dead simple to use and even allowed us to upload / download music, video, and photographs to / from the SmartStor Zero. Of course, other devices that support native DLNA upload and DLNA download (like the Droid X) will work right out of the box. Fusion Stream also supports media multitasking right inside the app. But hey, don’t take our word for it, watch Bill lay down the truth after the break.

Next-generation Mercedes mbrace iPhone app hands-on (video)

Next-generation Mercedes mbrace iPhone app hands-on (video)

Last year Hughes Telematics had the Mercedes mbrace iPhone app on display, providing some OnStar-like functionality like locking your car remotely, unlocking your car remotely, and even getting navigation to your car for those times when you park way out in the lot and can’t find it again when you’re suffering from post-shopping marathon mental lethargy. Now there’s a new version coming, getting submitted to Apple at the end of the month for a February release, and it adds a suite of new navigation features. Full details after the break.

Motorola Atrix 4G, HD multimedia dock, and laptop dock hands-on

Earlier today, we got a complete demo and some seat time with the Motorola Atrix 4G for AT&T at Motorola’s CES event, including its HD multimedia dock and laptop dock. The phone looks similar to the Samsung Vibrant, but with a black screen bezel and a tastefully patterned matte back cover. Build quality is very good, as we’d expect from a Motorola device. The QHD (960 x 540) display is gorgeous and the phone feels ultra snappy, thanks to the dual-core processor running Froyo. In fact, despite still running preliminary firmware, we recorded a blazing 2,616 score on the Quadrant test. The power button at the top back of the Atrix 4G also serves as a fingerprint reader, and there’s a dual-LED flash flanking the 5 megapixel camera. Check out the gallery below and read on for the details — and the complete demo on video — after the break.

Skype video call, the iPhone is the official, is now available (update: Hands-on)

All the signs indicate that it is a release for a few days, but I admit: we are waiting for Skype at CES next week, expect to pull the cover away from what may be the crown jewel of service in the coming months. IOS official Skype client has finally emerging ability to make video calls when the 3G iPhone, iPhone, 4, and the fourth-generation iPod Touch users to share real-time video between themselves and the users of Skype for Windows, Mac and Linux clients with Asus Video Phone (natural 3G users are not conveniently front facing camera, but they still send the video back-facing one). In addition, you can receive video from others when you use an iPad or a third-generation iPod touch. The service is free and works on both Wi-Fi and 3G – and taking account of the current footprint of Skype’s PC, we would argue that this represents a very real opportunity to make the hurt is to use face time. Not a word on when Skype will make a video-capable clients available for Android or other mobile platform, but Skype says that there are “many more” notices in Vegas next week, so we are not surprised. />
Update: So we just gave 3.0 a spin, with the iPhone-to-iPhone (both WiFi), iPhone-to-desktop (both Wi-Fi) , and while the iPhone-to-iPhone (both 3G). The first two worked well, although the desktop camera produces better quality. What is the worst case, the 3G-to-3G video calling, well … We do not recommend it unless absolutely necessary. Video after the break, and be sure to note the battery – about 10 minutes after use, we have dropped 66 percent to 61 />
[Thanks to everyone who sent this] />

Dell Venue launched in Hong Kong, we go hands-on

Isn’t it fun when you hit the right place at the right time? We just happened to be chillaxing in Hong Kong when Dell chose the city for the Venue’s global launch (and it’s actually hitting the shops slightly ahead of South Korea), so a quick hands-on is inevitable. As we’ve seen previously, this HK$ 3,999 (US$ 514) handset is essentially the Venue Pro’s Android 2.2 cousin sans, sporting the same curved (or “Shear Design”) vibrant AMOLED display at 4.1 inches and 800 x 480, but missing the slide-out keyboard. Under the hood lies a 1GHz Snapdragon with 1GB ROM and 512MB RAM, along with the usual microSD expansion, 1400mAh battery, 8 megapixel AF camera with LED flash, Bluetooth 2.3 EDR, WiFi and AGPS.

There aren’t any surprises in terms of software — the Venue shares the same snappy Stage UI and Swype keyboard with the Streak, except for the lack of landscape orientation for the homescreen (and that’s with orientation enabled in system settings). As for hardware, the killer feature here is the screen, and we found its curved Gorilla Glass to be surprisingly nice for our thumbs while swiping across it. The AMOLED panel underneath is also vibrant with great viewing angles. Elsewhere, build quality is almost solid bar the squeaky battery door, but at least it provides some grip. That’s all we got for now — we’ll delve into more details in our forthcoming review, so stay tuned.

I want to install Android on my iPod Touch 3rd gen. I heard it will not work but I want to really know. All the files I found are for Mac or Linux. I do have a partitioned hackintosh on my computer and am willing to use that. Is it possible to install Android on a 3rd gen iPod Touch with a computer running Windows 7?

HTC 7 Trophy first hands-on!

Here's yet another HTC handset from the WP7 launch today: the 7 Trophy . Features like the 3.8-inch WVGA LCD, 1GHz Snapdragon and the 5MP camera certainly sound familiar; even the phone's battery cover has taken a design cue from the Desire -- same peel-off method, and same matte texture. Not all that exciting, really, but the OS was running pretty smoothly except for the buggy HTC Hub and browser

Video: Nokia E7 demoed live at Nokia World

We've just spent a little bit of time ogling a very, very green E7 here in the so-called Experience Lounge at Nokia World 2010, and needless to say, this thing makes an impression -- you might think from the shots you've seen so far that it's roughly the same size as the N8 (especially since it shares the same case design), but it's actually quite a bit larger and more imposing. A friendly booth rep walked us through the beast's hardware and software highlights on video; check it after the break. Oh, and yes -- when it launches, it'll be available in five colors, so you don't have to get the green if you're not cool enough for it

Sony Ericsson’s 3-inch Xperia X8 made official, coming in Q3 2010 for €259

While the real Shakira may be busy gallivanting over in South Africa, Sony Ericsson's handset that bore the same (code)name has today been unveiled as the latest member of the Xperia line. Bridging the gap between the fully formed X10 and its Mini siblings, the 3-inch Xperia X8 will run Android 1.6 somewhere deep underneath a comprehensively customized skin. That means you get Sony Ericsson's social (Timescape) and media (Mediascape) aggregators whether you like them or not, and by the looks of the early hands-on pictures, it seems like a straight port of the UI available on the X10 Mini

SlingPlayer Mobile for Android beta preview

We can practically hear the collective sigh of relief among Slingbox owners now that Sling's finally just about ready to push out a version of SlingPlayer Mobile for Android -- by far the biggest hole in the company's lineup of mobile players ever since the iPhone version went live . This is no mere port, though; the company is boasting that it worked hard here to reduce load times, meaning the total wait you've got from app load to the time you're actually seeing General Hospital should be less than you're accustomed to, and that's a big win in our book.
