HTC's relationship with Microsoft is the stuff of daytime television. It was HTC's commitment to building high quality QWERTY handsets for Windows Mobile that first gave the young Taiwanese company the spotlight.

Verizon to light up LTE network in 30 "NFL cities" this year

We already knew Verizon was planning to hit one third of the country with LTE this year with plans to expand dramatically after that, but things are starting to come into sharper focus: the carrier today said that it'll light up 30 "NFL cities" with 4G by the end of the year. Now, there's only 32 teams, so it shouldn't be too hard to figure out where that's going to be -- and considering the plan is to hit "major metropolitan areas," we'll go ahead and guess Green Bay isn't on the list, even though the Packers are by far the best team in the league. (Buffalo and Jacksonville also spring to mind -- and let's not forget that the NFL still isn't in LA, despite Ari Gold's best fictional efforts on Entourage.) The plan is to first upgrade each cell site's backhaul connection to Gigabit Ethernet so they'll have the necessary bandwidth to support the 5-12Mbps down and 2-5Mbps up speeds with 30-150ms latency promised for Big Red's LTE network at launch.

MobileProtect now officially ready to insure your iPhone 4 from everything*

And just like that, it's confirmed. We'd heard through the grapevine that AT&T may be fixing to certify a third-party to sell an iPhone insurance program, and now it looks as if Asurion has been given the green light by Ma Bell, and not a moment too soon. According to the company, MobileProtect is the "only iPhone (and iPhone 4 ) insurance to protect against loss or theft (the reason for nearly 50% of phone claims), while also covering water or other liquid damage, accidental damage, and out-of-warranty failure." Of course, you'll have to shell out a borderline-ridiculous $11.99 per month for the coverage (and yeah, there's still a deductible), which is made even more outrageous by the fact that the iPhone 4 and its Gorilla Glass is nigh indestructible.

Exclusive: Android Froyo to take a serious shot at stemming platform fragmentation

We had a couple people at CTIA last week -- people whose words carry weight -- tell us off the record that the next major version of Android would take big strides toward stopping the ugly trend toward severe fragmentation that has plagued the platform for much of this and last year. You know, the kind of fragmentation that has already left users running not one, not two, not three, but four distinct versions of the little green guy (1.5, 1.6, 2.0, and 2.1) depending on a seemingly arbitrary formula of hardware, carrier, region, software customization, and manufacturers' ability to push updates in a timely fashion. Put simply, Google's been iterating the core far faster than most of its partners have been able to keep up.

Samsung Corby Folder official, just for Korea so far

Samsung's Corby line has a reputation as a fun, simple, cheap, colorful range of handsets, and that trend looks to continue now that the Corby Folder has gone official -- in the domestic South Korean market, anyway. The first Corby with a hinge keeps it relatively simple (by Korean standards) with a 2.6-inch QVGA display, 3G data (HSPA or EV-DO Rev. A depending on the carrier), Bluetooth, microSD expansion, a 3 megapixel camera, and naturally, DMB mobile TV reception.

New Samsung Galaxy Spica ROM leaks, tastes like Eclair

Remember those rumors of an Eclair -flavored update for Samsung's Galaxy Spica earlier this year? Well, boom: it's not official just yet, but a gentleman by the name of Sameer Prabhakar appears to have scored a leak of an official customized ROM for Sammy's most diminutive Android set based on 2.1, which is even better than the 2.0 we'd heard we'd be getting before.
