webOS 2.0 coming to ‘all’ Palm devices in the coming months

We're hoping he wasn't speaking out of turn here, but for what it's worth, Palm developer advocate Josh Marinacci has said on stage at webOS Developer Days today in New York that webOS 2.0 will be coming to "all" Palm devices in "the coming months." Now, we're going to go ahead and assume he's not talking about your Treo 650, your Palm III, or your LifeDrive, but we're taking that to mean that Pre, Pixi, Pre Plus, and Pixi Plus owners on all carriers around the globe can expect official upgrades for their phones -- and hey, considering how mild of an upgrade the Pre 2 is (and the fact you can't get it on some of the older devices' launch carriers), that's fantastic news.

Mobilicity takes Rogers to task over Chatr, alleges it’s using a ‘flanker brand’

At a glance, it seems like upstart Canadian value carrier Mobilicity has a fairly cut-and-dried case against Rogers here, alleging in a complaint to the government's Competition Bureau that the big guy is in direct violation of Section 78 of the country's Competition Act that prevents established companies from creating so-called "flanker brands" offering lower prices to kill off new players. In other words, it's saying Rogers' new Chatr sub-brand only exists to make life difficult for the likes of Mobilcity, WIND Mobile , and Public Mobile -- and considering the uncanny timing of Chatr's creation, Rogers is probably going to have a tough time explaining that one away

Polish operator Mobyland jumps straight from 2G to LTE

If you're still running a GPRS or EDGE network anywhere in the world, we've just about reached a breaking point now where you're probably better off moving straight to LTE rather than investing billions of dollars and years of work bringing HSPA or HSPA+ online.

Epic 4G review

Of the seemingly countless variants of the Galaxy S that Samsung's in the process of deploying around the globe, one stands out in a couple very unique (and important) ways: Sprint's Epic 4G . The Epic hangs on to a couple of the Galaxy line's most important characteristics -- namely the 1GHz Hummingbird processor and the 4-inch Super AMOLED display -- but adds in a sliding landscape QWERTY keyboard, support for the wickedly fast WiMAX network that Sprint shares with partner Clearwire, and a handful of other notable one-off customizations. We've already taken a look at two of the other US-bound Galaxy S models -- AT&T's Captivate and T-Mobile's Vibrant -- but it shouldn't take more than a quick glance at the Epic to tell you that this is a very, very different beast.

Samsung adds ISDB-Tb reception for Brazil’s Galaxy S

By and large, mobile TV services across the globe have rallied around DVB-H , T-DMB , and ATSC Mobile, but a couple strange (and very important) bedfellows ended up going a different direction: Japan and Brazil, both of whom use variants of ISDB-T . In Japan, the service is more commonly known as one-seg, and Brazil's localized version goes by the rather unwieldy ISDB-Tb

Gartner: Symbian is ‘re-arranging the deck chairs,’ losing buoyancy fast

We all know that Symbian is still holding the fort as the globe's most widely used mobile OS, but anyone interested in criticizing it nowadays will have to get into a queue . Nick Jones from Gartner is latest to launch a broadside against the apparently complacent market leader, opining that its user experience has been surpassed by iOS and Android , and arguing that future iterations do not promise enough innovation to make the platform stand out. He underpins these observations with his firm's latest estimates, which indicate Symbian's decline in share is accelerating , before positing the idea that the Foundation sets aside some talent for skunkworks projects in order to give itself fallback options should Symbian^4 not be blindingly marvelous.

Editorial: What happened to the US-spec Motorola MOTOROI?

Motorola, in case you haven't noticed, hasn't done much in the way of high-spec gear since the announcement of the original Droid way back in October of last year -- and, well, that's a problem for a company that's in the midst of trying to kick-start a recovery to get its corporate split off on the right foot.

TeliaSonera already upgrading LTE network, ‘practical speeds’ of up to 80Mbps promised

There's no rest for the wicked -- and perhaps nothing in the world of wireless describes "wicked" better than Nordic carrier TeliaSonera , which holds the distinction of having deployed the world's first commercial LTE network last year. Thing is, the network's been taking a little heat for being effectively no faster than some of the recent HSPA+ deployments around the globe, but no worries -- they're already working on it
