Samsung Galaxy S first smartphone to be Wi-Fi Direct certified
Samsung has generally been on the cutting edge when it comes to giving its smartphones the latest and greatest in terms of compatibility, with the Omnia being the first DivX certified handset in America this month two years ago. Now, it's looking to wrangle yet another first, with this one having the potential to be far more important

LG Optimus T hands-on
The low-end LG Optimus S that wowed us earlier the other day has a magenta twin -- the LG Optimus T , headed to T-Mobile with very similar hardware. Considering that both carriers' phones will come in purple and black, you could easily be excused for confusing the two -- aside from a prominent logo and the physical button arrangement, they've got the exact same build

LG Optimus S for Sprint, first hands-on!
The low-end Android game just got real, folks, with Sprint's introduction of the LG Optimus S, a $50 (on-contract, post-rebate) Android slatephone running Froyo on a 3.2-inch HVGA screen, with mobile hotspot functionality for up to five devices, 802.11 b/g WiFi and a 600MHz processor to run the whole shebang. As you'd expect in a world of 1GHz smartphones at the $200 price point, it's not quite up to spec, but that doesn't keep it from having a super-solid build, durable and weighty, that belies its low price.

Mozilla’s Seabird phone concept teaches us how to dream
Look up, peasant, from your soot-stained hands. Drop that shovel into the furrowed ground and gaze upon the magic* that Mozilla has wrought. Concept designer Billy May, working through Mozilla's "Open Web Concept Phone" project, has gathered community feedback and followed up on some rather mundane visions for the mobile future with this little beauty, the Mozilla Seabird.

Microsoft bringing Windows Phone 7 to some languages without Xbox Live or Zune?
Microsoft has already gone on record saying that Windows Phone 7 will be initially launching in just five languages, all with essentially the same easy character set -- English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish -- but they're undoubtedly champing at the bit to ramp that list up to a few more. In fact, the latest word on the street is that they're going to be cutting a bunch of corners on those additional tongues, presumably in an effort to get them on shelves sooner rather than later.

Zelfy Peel might be the iPhone remote you’ve been looking for
Our eyes were drawn to an FCC filing this morning from a California start-up by the name of Zelfy; a quick glance at Zelfy's site reveals that they're in "stealth mode," but the picture of a woman using an iPhone to control her TV should give you an idea of what these guys are up to.

Motorola-Verizon tablet will have FiOS TV, ten-inch screen?
Sure, we've heard Verizon discuss Android tablets once or twice , but it's just now that we're getting our first real juice about Motorola's companion device . The Financial Times reports that Verizon and Motorola are teaming up on an Android tablet with dual cameras, Adobe Flash support and a ten-inch screen, plus mobile hotspot functionality (which implies Verizon cellular data) and -- get this -- access to pay TV.

Nokia N8 battery swap: it can be done (with a Torx+ screwdriver, patience, and white gloves)
It's still kind of freaking us out that Nokia chose aesthetics over maximum functionality by putting the N8's battery out of the user's reach -- but is it really? The Nokia Blog has scored a customer service manual showing the step-by-step process for replacing the battery, and as long as you've got access to a size 4 Torx+ screwdriver and a little patience. Turns out the battery is just a plain old BL-4D, the same kind of pack used in the E5 and N97 Mini -- so if you're upgrading, you might even already have a spare lying around by the time you buy your N8.

Nexus One , EVO 4G , Droid and Dream sure, but the Acer Liquid ? Yes, the underclocked Snapdragon slate that never made it stateside has just received its own Android 2.2 port. Though still in early alpha with no Wi-Fi or camera functionality and plenty of bugs to boot, the freshly frozen yogurt has the Liquid turning tricks already -- with very playable-looking framerates in Raging Thunder II and Flash video support .
