AT&T tells Samsung Focus customers not to buy microSD cards yet, wait for ‘certified’ ones (update: random access speed is key)
We'd put forth the theory that Microsoft and Samsung would eventually certify microSD cards specifically for use with Windows Phone 7 devices after they finally came to terms with the fact that the microSD drama surrounding the Focus was going to lead directly to broken devices and broken hearts -- and sure enough, that's exactly what's happening. We just received this statement from AT&T, pointing out that the platform is extremely finicky when it comes to microSD selection -- so finicky, in fact, that only "Certified for Windows Phone 7" cards should be used. No such cards are currently available.

Windows Phone 7 USB tethering uncovered on Samsung phones
If you're the proud owner of a Samsung Focus or Omnia 7 , you can scratch a pretty major item off the list of basic features missing from WP7: USB tethering. A couple of sites have come upon a quick and relatively easy hack to enable using your handset as a 3G modem on Microsoft's new platform. You'll need to dial up ##634# to get into a diagnostics menu, switch over to a "Modem, Tethered Call" mode and deal with a few more prompts along the way, but the end result is that you'll have a pretty much automated USB tether setup on your hands

Samsung Focus, HTC Surround, and LG Quantum all outed a bit early on AT&T’s Windows Phone 7 site
These details aren't supposed to be live yet, we presume, but AT&T's just posted full information on its Windows Phone 7 lineup over on its site. We've got the Surround from HTC, the Samsung Focus, and the LG Quantum -- and as expected, they're a slider (sorta), a slate, and a full QWERTY slider, respectively.

We'd heard November 8th was AT&T's Windows Phone 7 launch date, but this makes it real -- Microsoft advertisements on Microsoft's page, pointing to a brand-new Windows Phone website.

Nokia: the fight begins now, Symbian^4 N-Series device later
Nokia's newly appointed Mobile Solutions chief , Anssi Vanjoki, has penned an impassioned post over at Nokia Conversations today where he sets out his perspective on the company's current position and future challenges. Describing the Finnish phone maker as "a challenger now," rather than an incumbent, Vanjoki wants to introduce a "laser focus on quality," with his two central aims being to reclaim Nokia's reputation for high-end devices and to re-energize a flagging fan base. He specifically namedrops Ricky Cadden -- who yesterday shut down Symbian-Guru because he'd lost faith with the company -- and clearly considers grassroots support like that an important aspect of how Nokia's success will be judged

Samsung’s pico projecting W9600 gets a brief hands on
Samsung made a fairly tame showing at CES but we did bump into a rather sweet bit of integrated projection fun. The W9600 replaces last year's W7900 , and, like its predecessor, the specs are pretty thin. We do know, however, know that it uses Texas Instruments' WVGA chip for the projection, has a 5 megapixel cam, a completely beautiful touchscreen AMOLED display, and can project vids, pics, and even the phone's interface.
